[RANT] Since 3D took over, 2D performance is neglected

    Hello.

It seems this comes from a long way (maybe since the days of Windows XP). Now it seems modern Windows Operating Systems don't perform well when working with 2D (even whether there is any real 2D or not). I am a PC gamer and I am quite satisfied with the gaming performance of my GTX 970 card (and many others, be they nVidia or AMD).

Anyway nowadays I am feeling that 2D performance in general is very lackluster for modern videocards. I must confess I can be very picky at times but I swear I can see the dialogs redrawing sometimes. It's pretty annoying.
Working with any common applications and/or Photoshop and the like doesn't feel better either. I think this all stems from the fact that MS in its infinite wisdom has been changing APIs since the Windows 3.x times. I don't know how 2D acceleration is handled in w10, but I think it uses WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) or something like that (correct me if I am wrong).

Well, I have found out that fastest 2D performance comes with integrated video *Mad. Yes, integrated Intel video (HDxxxx) seems to perform a lot better than my overpriced nVidia card. I have also tested some AMD cards earlier and they didn't perform better either. What is even more disturbing is that ancient pci cards performed even better (I think it was the APIs used at that time rather than the hardware but who knows).

Anyway. I am pretty pissed off with this. All these modern state of the art hardware (hefty microprocessors, very fast ram, very nice pci express bus, etc) but you cannot get some nice performance from common usage. *Mad

Maybe someone knows some bag of tricks for speeding up 2D operation... (wishful thinking...)

Your ideas and comments are welcome.

    :)

  2. Problem with 3D Builder for Windows 10

    Michael,

Thanks for reaching out to us with your question, and sorry for the issues you are having.

DXF files can be both 2D and 3D. Currently 3D Builder only supports opening 3D DXF files, though we are looking at adding 2D support in future.

Do you know if your file is 2D or 3D? If it is 2D you may need to find a different tool to use, or try and find another file format version of the file you currently have.

Also, it is important to note that 3D Builder does not save to .DXF. Currently we only save to .3MF, .STL, .OBJ, and .PLY. So you will not be able to save to .DXF if it does open up in 3D Builder.

  3. N8 GPS and maps

C5 has at least these views:

"Arrow view", "2D view", "3D view" and "Route OverView".

The arrow view looks pretty Weird. There is no much difference between 2D and 3D views because the quality of maps is so bad!

[RANT] Since 3D took over, 2D performance is neglected

The question is not 2D or 3D. It is FHD, 2k, 4k, 6k or 8k HD's displays. There are no reason to dig 2D stories again.
What is your ultimate purpose for 2D displaying?

Maybe 2D isn't real 2D anymore. I am referring to fast windows desktop usage feeling.

Did you notice that frequencies of graphic cards when using strictly 2D are almost same for years back ? My old Matrox from 1990s had 300 MHz 2D frequency and new present one rarely goes over 400MHz even under high loads.

No. I haven't noticed. Thank you for pointing that out.

[RANT] Since 3D took over, 2D performance is neglected

20 years ago, the GPU card RAM is about 128MB. During that time, 512MB GPU card RAM is workstation class. But now, you are understood.
What I want to mention is, in future, the gap GPU card for workstation and high specs gaming GPU card will become closer and closer until they are no differences.
The phenomena that happens now, 2D and 3D are the same story.
