Windows 10: RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC

Discus and support RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC in Windows 10 Tutorials to solve the problem; Thank you for explaining those terms both for virtualization Host and the Remote Host. There is definitely at difference. Now I am glad to understand... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Tutorials' started by Brink, Feb 18, 2015.

RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC

To work with software installed in Windows XP, you of course have to use that machine. In you case you connect to it from your Windows 10 virtual host and use then XP remotely.

I was not talking about using XP Home vm in Windows 7, I was talking about using XP Pro which can be downloaded and installed for free in Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. Let's read that reply of mine you referred to once again (quote from your thread):

Read more about XP Mode and installing it in Windows 7 on our sister site the Seven Forums: Windows XP Mode - Install and Setup - Windows 7 Help Forums.

XP Mode can easily be installed also in virtual Seven running on a Windows 10 Hyper-V virtual machine, so called nested virtualization: Windows XP Pro virtual machine running on a Windows 7 virtual machine running on a Windows 10 host.

Thank you again for that valuable information. That explains why I was able to use XP Home when I used Windows 7 Pro, which I have a licensed copy here. So that may work.
Thanks for the excellent information you supply, Kari.

I'm afraid you are still misunderstanding this. You can never in any circumstances use Windows XP Home over Remote Desktop Connection (without non-supported hacks, that is). Not from Windows 10, not from Windows 7.

My workaround was and is to install Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate on a Windows 10 Hyper-V virtual machine, then install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode to that virtual machine. Windows XP Mode gives you a Windows XP Pro.

In this scenario you would then have a Windows XP Pro virtual machine running on a Windows 7 virtual machine running on Windows 10 host, and you could use Remote Desktop Connection to connect tro both Windows 7 vm and Windows XP Mode vm to get the remote audio from the XP, as this was your original issue: no audio in Windows XP Home vm.

Kari , Thank you for all you do. Please allow me to point out a typo in the tips section toward the end of Part 3, where you explain using a command prompt to do a shutdown or restart of the host machine. The switch for restart should be -R.

Yes, of course. Seems that when I have written this tutorial I have simply copy & pasted the previous line and forgot to edit it, forgot to replace the -s with -r.

Thanks to you the typo is now fixed *Smile

Thank you Kari for your reply over a week ago. I just noticed that you sent one back.
Yes, I guess I did misunderstand that I can never use Windows SP Home over Remote Desktop Connection. Unless of course I had XP Professional, which allows RDC.
But I like your suggestion using Windows 7 Professional, which I have, and using Virtual PC, installing XP Home and it can be used to communicate to my Windows 10 through RDC for Win 7. A couple of questions to add:
    1. Is Virtual PC something found automatically in Win 7 Pro? Or do I download this from the web? Then I'll have to find some steps in installing XP Home after Win 7 Pro has been installed via my Hyper-V from Win 10.
    2. Since I've partitioned a XP Home drive from Hyper-V, I'd like to wipe that drive out and install Win 7 onto it, sort of like starting over again. How do I do that? Are there forums in Ten Forums to help me to do so?
    Thanks again,

You are still misunderstanding me. I repeat: You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to Windows XP Home. Not now, not if you install Windows 7 Professional on Hyper-V vm and then install Virtual PC on that vm.

    Your options are:
    • Use a third party program to connect remotely to Windows XP Home, TeamViewer is a good alternative.
      -- OR --
    • Install Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise on a Hyper-V vm in Windows 10, then install the free Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode on that Windows 7 vm (tutorial on our sister site the Seven Forums). The free Windows XP Mode is XP Pro SP3 and can be installed on Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. You can then use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to both Windows 7 vm and the XP Mode vm running on it
I recommend the option 1, option 2 involves nested virtualization (virtual machine on a virtual machine) which is more resource heavy alternative.

    Thanks Kari,
OK. I have tried the Team Viewer, and sound is not possible for this method, and I didn't like the connection, very poor. Unless I did something improper, it was not a good alternative for me.
Option 2, I'd like to try, as I have Win 7 Pro and have downloaded Virtual PC and XP Mode, which has Win XP Pro built in it. That was the method I used before. I even have XP Mode image file saved somewhere on the computer from before, so perhaps that would be the best method for me to go.
    Thanks.

    Two Questions

I went through the tutorial as win 10 is new for me although I have been using RDC for many years. My problem is the new laptop I bought for my spouse. It has a resolution of 3840x2160. We remote in to a win7pro machine for common stuff such as quicken. The new laptop (home win10) works fine but I can't see anything when I remote to the older desktop(1024x768). The remote session is literally unusablely small. I was hoping your resolution bit would help but that just makes the session a window instead of full screen. Do you have any suggestions for enlarging the remote?

Question 2. I tried the tscon disconnect and it works OK. But I get the attached dialog. Is there any way to get rid of that?

Hi Spokey, welcome to the Ten Forums.

    1. There's not much you can do, the resolutions (on laptop and old desktop) are so different that whatever you do the desktop is shown quite small on the laptop. The maximum resolution the Remote session can and will use can be selected when you take the resolution slider left from the far left / full screen:

Alternatively you can change the remote client's (the laptop) resolution to smaller before making a remote connection.

    2. No. When you give the tscon command on remote host, it sends the Disconnect flag to the remote client, which then shows that notification. That's just something you have to accept.

    thanks

was afraid of that. using the slider doesn't really help. the net effect is I can either have a max window on the lapttop or a window on the laptop. the text is too small to read in either case. Going to play with the desktop video. It currently has an old monitor that may be limiting it so I'm going to swap in the monitor I use to see if it makes a diff.

    Kari,

I followed this tutorial to allow Remote Desktop Connection to my Windows 10 laptop with no problems. I am now trying to do the same with my new Windows 10 desktop but I a have run into a problem.

On Step 2.7 on the HomeGroup dialog I don't get the option to "Change network location".

Is it a setting that I need to change somewhere else?

    TIA,
    Paul

    Brink,

Thanks for the quick reply. I figured it out right after I posted by running the troubleshooter on the HomeGroup dialog. I'm pretty sure that is the first time that I've run a Microsoft troubleshooter which has actually solved my problem. I immediately left for lunch so did I did not have time to post the, or my, resolution.

I would like to thank Kari, yourself, and all contributors to tenforums.com for their dedication to helping users like myself by writing these tutorials and answering our questions.
