Windows 10: Re-installing Windows 10 on PC that was originally Win 8.1

I've had my laptop for 10 years. Started with win 8.1. Had win 10 installed about a year later and it has been running perfectly since then. 2 days ago it stopped. It would not let me recover. It would not let me restore. 9 plus years. I had to reset my pc all the way. Lost everything. It now loads into win 8.1 and it is activated. I cannot reinstall win 10. Why in the **** is that happening? Why would it be giving me errors it never had before? Does Microsoft realize how stupid up that is? Not that I lost all my sh*t. But I can't get my computer back to the way it was TWO DAYS AGO. I can't be

Installing Windows 10 on New PC?

I'm going to be building a new PC on Christmas and want to install Windows 10 on it. I have Windows 10 on my current PC, which I installed upgrading from 8.1 with the files on a USB. How do I go about installing a clean copy of Windows 10 on this new PC? I think I recall something about installing it once makes Microsoft recognize your hardware, but since this will be a PC I'm not sure what steps I need to take. Do I need to go 8.1 -> 10 or is there a method of going directly to 10?
