  1. Read-Only files and Attrib command not working.

After spending hours attempting to change ownership of my drives, set user permissions, I cannot for the life of me get any folder, subfolder, or file to remain unchecked on "read-only". Attempting to make the files writable

Geek Squad tried various methods and essentially told me the new windows update broke it, and the attrib command would not work. The last 5 attempts were my attempts after changing the environment variable "Path" to include C:\Widows\System32 at the end.

Going to see if changing the ownership of my E drive to my user account will fix the issue, but I'm doubtful.

  3. Show / hide files HELP..

You can do this from the command prompt using the attrib command.
    • Plug in your usb stick.
    • Click start then type CMD. Right click the cmd icon and run as administrator.
    • Once the command prompt is up type "cd.." without the "" and then press enter. Repeat until you get to the root directory.
    • Now type the drive letter of your USB stick.
    • You can view all files even the hidden ones by typing "dir/ah" without the "" and then press enter.
    • Now you are ready to clear all attributes. Type "attrib *. -h -s /s /d" without the "" and then press enter. (Be careful not to run this command on your windows directory).
    • Now you should be able to see all the files on your usb stick.

  4. Read-Only files and Attrib command not working.

Recently upgraded to 10, I have taken ownership of old HDDs but still cannot change files from read-only

    Hi Jaha,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I appreciate you for providing details about the issue and your efforts towards resolving it.

    I will certainly help you

I understand that, you wish to remove read-only attributes for a folder.

Let us try the following steps, and check if it helps.

    • Press Windows key + X
      and click Command Prompt (Admin)

    • To remove the Read-only attribute and to set the System attribute, use the following command:
    attrib -r +s drive:\<path>\<foldername>

    • For example, to remove the Read-only attribute and to set the System attribute for the C:\Test folder, use the following command:
    attrib -r +s c:\test

    • Be aware that some programs may not operate correctly with folders for which the System attribute and the Read-only attribute are set. Therefore, use the following command to remove these attributes:
    attrib -r -s c:\test

    Hope it helps.

Let us know the status, we are glad to assist you further.
