Windows 10: ReadyBoost and Storage

Hello everyone,

So as my old laptop has 4GB of RAM, I thought about giving it a boost without buying new hardware during the current times.

ReadyBoost seemed like one great idea, however, my question is: if I dedicate some space to ReadyBoost, will it be completely gone, even if I turn off ReadyBoost at some point in time?


To further explain, say I have a 28GB flash drive, I want to reserve 4094MB of it for ReadyBoost when it's turned on. When I turn off ReadyBoost, will those 4094MB be gone, even if ReadyBoost is turned off, leaving me with 24GB of memory for storage only?

ReadyBoost can speed up your computer by using storage space on most USB flash drives and flash memory cards.

ReadyBoost uses the Superfetch service that should be enabled and set to "Running" and "Automatic".

For ReadyBoost to effectively speed up your computer, the flash drive or memory card should have at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of available space. If your drive or card doesn't have enough available space for ReadyBoost , you'll see a message telling you to free
some space on it. For best results, use a flash drive or flash memory card with at least double the amount of available space as the amount of memory (RAM) in your computer.

I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if it helps.

1. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

2. In the AutoPlay dialog box, choose Speed Up My System.

3. The flash drive’s Properties dialog box appears with the
ReadyBoost tab upfront.

4. Click on ReadyBoost tab.

5. Choose the Use This Device option.

6. Click OK.

Readyboost Misconception Limits Memory Allocation

Almost all the readyboost tips I've seen focus on formatting the removable device correctly as a way of increasing the amount of memory readyboost will use. Some posts suggest using exFAT while others suggest using NTFS but they all say to choose, "use
this device for readyboost". Choosing this option is a mistake. When you click the readyboost tab at the top of the device properties box you have already designated it for readyboost. It is not necessary to choose, "use this device for readyboost". Doing
so sets readyboost to it's default. Instead, choose, "use this device." Then move the slider all the way to the right and click apply. To confirm the removable device(storage) is being used for readyboost simply read the text that appears. It will say, "This
device is being used to increase system speed".

With regard to your query, the most effective way to determine whether a specific flash drive meets ReadyBoost requirements is to test it. The Windows will automatically test removable storage when attached. If a storage device fails the test, Windows will
automatically retest the storage on a regular basis.

You can configure ReadyBoost by right-clicking the device in Windows Explorer, clicking
Properties, and then click the ReadyBoost tab. The only configuration option is to configure the space reserved for the cache. Larger caches can improve performance, but the ReadyBoost cache cannot be greater than 4 GB on a
FAT32 file system.
