Real-Time Protection high temp/cpu usage when external hub with HDDs is connected to USB

I'm getting high temps on my CPU when idle 70-73c with an usb hub with 10 external HDDs connected. If I disconnect the hub, the temps drop to high 40c. When I plug it back in, it spikes again to 70+c.If I keep it plugged in but turn off Real-Time Protection the temp drops back to high 40s. But I don't feel safe that way.So, basically:USB hub connected + RT-protection ON: high tempUSB hub connected + RT-protection OFF: low tempUSB hub disconnected + RT protection on/off: low tempI triedReal-Time Protection high temp/cpu usage when external hub with HDDs is connected to USB :Different USB portTask ScheduledAdding all HDDs as exceptionsTried a couple of different motherboards and re

Real-time Protection Prevents External HDD From Entering Sleep Mode

I am using Windows 10 Pro (21H2) and I find myself having to disable 'Real-time Protection' in Windows Defender as it has been preventing my external HDD from entering sleep mode for the last 2 years. I have reported my problem to Microsoft multiple times now, but it seems as if I'm the only one with this problem.

I need the external HDD connected regularly, so disconnecting it (from USB and power) and reconnecting it each time is not a solution for me, and I'm obviously tired of constantly disabling Real-time Protection as well. So, I found an article on how to indefinitely disable Real-time Protection through Group Policy Editor. Until the issue is resolved (whenever that may be) I think I'll just use the free Norton subscription through my ISP to make up for the very obvious shortcomings of Windows Defender.

  3. Windows Explorer high CPU Usage in Windows 10

To further troubleshoot the issue, we suggest checking the Task Manager again to see what are the
applications that have high CPU usage. To do this, follow the same steps you did from the previous reply:

    • Click on the Start button and type Task Manager on the search box.
    • On the Task Manager window, you should see the programs running.
    • Click on the More details drop-down button to see the total number of apps running and their real-time CPU usage.

However, based on your response above, it seems that you may need to create a new user account again and just install your apps manually instead of copying them as your
previous user account might be corrupted.

Once your done with the steps, please let us know how it goes.

Windows Explorer high CPU Usage in Windows 10

    Hi Andrew,

Usually, too many background processes can boost your CPU usage. Since you already disabled the apps that are not necessary on startup,
we suggest checking the applications running once you have successfully boot Windows 10. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

    • Click on the Start button and type Task Manager on the search box.
    • On the Task Manager window, you should see the programs running.
    • Click on the More details drop-down button to see the total number of apps running and their real-time CPU usage.

From there, you should see what applications are running on high CPU usage. You can also
restart the Windows Management Instrumentation service and see if your CPU performance will improve. Follow the instructions below to restart the service:

    • Click on the Start button and type Services.
    • Scroll down the list and look for Windows Management Instrumentation.
    • Right click on it and select Restart.

Should you have further questions, please let us know.
