    Reboot failure

I cannot get my older laptop to reboot.

Upon reboot I get the following message:

The operating system did not shut down cleanly.

    Reconstructing Cache Metadate.

Please do not interrupt this process.

Eventually I get the rotating dots and it adds:

    Preparing Automatic Repair.

After the rotating dots appear again the screen blanks and it goes back to the original error message.

I cannot get into the bios as no input works. I tried the solution of when I see the rotating dots pressing the power button and holding it down for 15 to 20 seconds and repeating this three time. It doesn't work. I tried repeating 10 times and it didn't work. This problem occurred after I got an update notice and choose "Update and restart". Anyone know how to fix this?

Since I cannot even get to the bios will a solution that wants me to use an external drive work?

    :)

    rebooting

Try turning off automatic restart on system failure and see if it is giving a blue-screen before it reboots. That might at least give you an error message or code so you can start your troubleshooting from there. Otherwise it is just a shot in the dark. It could be bad RAM, bad HDD, bad ODD, a bad cable somewhere, PSU dying, motherboard dying, a software issue and the list goes on...

I don't think he ever said it reboots during the boot process. It just randomly reboots while the computer is running.
