  1. Recent apps don't work in the "Recommendations" section of the start menu

After the KB5025310 update, the one that changed the way the Print Screen key works in Windows 11, apparently broke the work of the "Recommended" section, the section in which applications are displayed.Previously, after opening the application, the application icon appeared in the "Recommended" section. Now this does not happen and I see applications that are useless for me that I almost never use.I attribute this to the problem, as the behavior is very strange, and unexpected. How to fix the situation?

Windows 11 Start Menu - Recommended (Recent files and new apps) section

    Dear Microsoft,

I'd like to be able to fill the "Recommended" part of the start menu with more icons of my choosing if I disable "Show recently added apps", "Show the most used apps" and "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer" on my "Personalisation > Start" settings.

    Reasoning :

I always hated the idea of showing "Recent files" for privacy concern, and this real-estate of the start menu is now wasted if we don't use this feature.

Here's what I want from my Start Menu :

While you're at it, please allow the end-user to set the height of the start menu to his choosing. As it stand now, the start menu on W11 is a massive step-back feature-wise and this need to be fixed ASAP.

Also, the taskbar is a mess right now. Here's some example of missing features :

    • can't open "task manager" from the taskbar
    • can't pin desktop icons directly to the taskbar
    • can't drag & drop files/apps/folder to the taskbar

  3. Does anyone know how to put recent files folder on the start menu list?

Start menu LIST, you note! Not the tile on the start page (or whatever is the name of that place holder) or a link in ALL APPS!

This used to be a relatively simple line in start menu lists of all (as far as I can remember) previous Windows systems. Why Microsoft has decided to MOVE it to the quick access pane is beyond me.

First off, it involves an extra step of opening up the Explorer. Second, the list of things the user can put on the start menu list using
Settings - Personalization - Start sequence, is limited by the contents of

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu Places

which is VERY UNFLEXIBLE, to say the list!

Third, in quick access pane I don' t seem to be able to revert back to the initial groupings of recent files and frequent folders (these are gone and now shown as a list altogether)

  4. Recent apps don't work in the "Recommendations" section of the start menu

How can I get rid of the silly "Recommended" section on the Start Menu of Windows 11 ? It is driving me crazy, and clutters up my Start Menu.

    Hi ,KenDayQE

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for sharing your concern with us today.

I understand that get rid of the silly "Recommended" section on the Start Menu of Windows 11 .

We are here to help on this issue.

    1. Disable recently opened items in Start, Jump List and File Explorer

Open the Start menu and select the Settingsapplication.

2.In the sidebar on the left, select the personalization section.

    Scroll down and select start.

3.Turn off the option to show recently opened items in Start, Jump List, and File Explorer.

This will make the recently opened file or document disappear from the recommended section.

4.You can even go one step further and even hide recently installed applications from the Start menu. All you need to do is to turn off the Show recently added applications option, which you can find on it to get the personalized screen you need.

I hope the information provided is useful for you. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our support.

    Best Regards
