Windows 10: Recent udpate - screen boots black with just a mouse pointer

Hello everyone,

So i recently gave my laptop an update today. It was fine before but...now it boots to a black screen with just a mouse pointer visible. What should i do?

Windows 10 won't boot

Yeah tried that, do have a wireless mouse. Booted un pluged no joy. Just get a black screen then no pointer at all...

 

Windows 10 not displaying desktop

No task bar. Just black screen and mouse active pointer. No function keys seem to work. No windows, no pop-up menus. Just a featureless black screen and a pointer.

 

Some update probably replaced the graphics driver. Give it some time, and if you don't see the desktop, try restarting it several times, before it fully loads Windows. Eventually you will be presented with the troubleshooting screen. Select Advanced startup options. Then try first to boot in Low Resolution mode. This should boot in basic graphics and allow you to update the graphics driver. If this doesn't work, try booting in Safe Mode with networking (to also have internet access). From there, you can try to manually updating or rollback the graphics driver from Device Manager. If it cannot replace the driver in Safe Mode, you can change it to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. On next boot it will start with basic graphics, so you can then run the setup and update your graphics drivers.
