Subject says it all but let me expand

So a few weeks back I am not sure of the date I went ahead and updated my windows 10 pro x64

I normally don't allow updates unless I have time to work through possible issues with how it will affect other software

When it finally restarted I had blank monitors. A quick Power Down Reboot fixed it and viola its working

The next morning my monitors were blank again. I leave my system running 7/24 for nefarious reasons and have a scheduled reboot every night via task-manager !

Slightly curious I shutdown the PC via the [Start button] > [Power] > [Shutdown] and powered it back up and everything works normal but if I go the the same procedure and Restart as opposed to Shutdown, I get the Blank Monitor No Signal Indicator floats for awhile until finally the monitors go into their own sleep mode.

I did notice when it is booting that it starts with the bios logo and even the windows logo however I hear the familiar device manager sound like I plugged in and unplugged a Flash Drive and that's when the screens go dark.

I cloned the Drive and dropped it into another machine and the same problem exists.

I am 100% sure that the problem is my OS on this must have gotten some slight corruption.

Can somebody please give me a fix that does not require some off the wall software from someone I don't trust to FIX windows boot problems

    Thanks

    :)

    External monitor blanking often

    Hi,

Please answer these questions to assist you better.

    • What is the make and model of your computer and external monitor?
    • Have you installed all pending Windows and driver updates?
    • Do you get any error message?

I suggest you to install all pending Windows updates in your PC and also update Display drivers. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: I would suggest you to check and install any latest Windows Updates available.

    • Go to Start and then Settings.
    • Click on Update and Recovery.
    • Check for updates under
      Windows Updates.
    • Restart the system and check if the issue is resolved.

Step 2: Please refer to the following Wiki article created by
Andre Da Costa on How to: Install and Update drivers in Windows 10.

How to: Install and Update Hardware Drivers in Windows 10

Do let us know if you still get random black screen in the external monitor. Thank you.

    4890 - monitor is blank

    It works!!!!

Thank you OnBoard and Mussels for your recent replies.

@Mussels: I rearranged my power cables so that I wasn't daisy chaining anything except the fans on one line, and my 2 HDDs on another.

That didn't do it, but was certainly a valid point.

@OnBoard: When you said "Was first boot PCI-E set to the MSI card in bios?" I didn't quite understand what that meant, hehe. But I took the hint and tried moving my cards around.

    1) I put the MSI in PCIE1, and the 4890 in PCIE2. I plugged a monitor into each.
    2) Powered on, still no action on the 4890, but my MSI showed me a screen! This was a great first step.
    3) Started windows, and per your original suggestion, just went to see if I could find the 4890 listed in Device manager. It was there! Another great sign. It was listed as generic VGA. That gave me the confidence to go ahead and move forward.
    4) I shut down, plugged all my junk in, and booted with everything powered. No problems, but still no action on the 4890.
    5) Now that I could see the 4890 was being detected at least as a video card, I figured I just needed to update my drivers.
    6) I put my ASUS mobo drivers disk in and let it do its thing, and restart twice.
    7) I ran windows update, and it automatically grabbed my 4890 drivers!
    8) I restarted and my 4890 screen was still blank. But when I went to display settings, it showed 2 monitors. I clicked Identify and saw a HUGE number 2 on my monitor. Sweet!!

You guys rock! I am a web developer, and just not patient enough with hardware to try all of these random things.

@Matthecat: It helped to know that there were plenty of random situations and to not give up.
@Tigger: It helped to know that my PSU was certainly not the issue.
@Mussels: It helped to think about how I was distributing power. As I said, it has been 5+ years since I've gotten my hands dirty like this.

I can't thank you enough. Especially OnBoard. Your insight was very accurate, and I'm going to be able to put the door back on my case for the first time in 2 weeks!

I'd like to say I'll see you guys around, but I don't know how often I'd get back in this forum. If I don't see you - thanks again. I hope this post can help some other random soul in the future.

  4. Recent update seemed to cause my monitors to go blank after restarting but not on reboot

    External monitor blanking often

    Hi,

Thanks for the update and response.

I suggest you to reinstall the monitor drivers form the manufacturer website and check if it helps. Follow the below steps for the same.

    • Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard.
    • Click on “Device Manager” from that list.
    • Search for the Monitor driver from the device list, right click on it and then select “Uninstall”. On the un-installation window, if you have an option: “Delete the driver software for this device” you may select that
and then remove the corrupted drivers from the computer.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete it and then restart the computer if prompted.
Refer the below link for the same.
