Windows 10: Recently downloaded files disappeared. Bug or virus?

So i downloaded some PDFs (from a trusted source).

I was moving them into a new folder in the desktop and when I pasted them, only one of the files was moved. The other 3 disappeared from the Downloads folder and were nowhere to be seen.

After a while I checked my new folder and it was nowhere to be seen.

I checked the recycle bin, I searched through the drive, I enabled hidden files, I have even checked the recent folder in Windows and there was no reference to the files other than the New Folder shortcut (but the reference is broken because the folder disappeared).

I definitely downloaded the files because they show in my browser's downloads (missing references).

I am not worried about the files because i can download them again. But i am wondering if it's a bug other people encountered or i may have a virus, rootkit or something. I scanned with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes and both came clean.



This happened to me a couple months ago with recently downloaded files too. I downloaded files, moved them into a folder in the desktop and the folder disappeared. I don't remember if the files were downloaded from the same source or not.

or just open regedit and remove all the fileX from that key.

 

Downloaded files disappear


When you download a file through any browser, there's an option somewhere to 'Open Containing Folder.'

In Windows, to find a file you have downloaded...

1. Open your personal folder by clicking the Start button and then clicking your user name at the top of the Start menu's right pane.
   
2. Double-click one of the following folders:
   
   • Downloads
     
   • Documents
     
   • Pictures
     
   • Videos
     
   • Music

If you do not see the file you are looking for, but know its file name, you can search for it by following these steps:
To search for a file you have downloaded...

1. Click the Start button
   
2. Type all or part of the file name into the Search box.
   The file you are looking for will appear in the list of results.

 

Recent File List

that's all off already dude lol, I'm really surprised there is no fix for the recent files list/MRU in the file menu of programs haha

I appreciate the help, MS really needs to implement a Group Policy or a string that can do that for all programs installed
