Windows 10: Recovering Images from Old External Hard Drive

Just this evening I found the external hard drive used with our last PC. I have not connected it to our current PC in fear of making some dreadful mistake. My goal is to retrieve all jpg image files from that old drive. Note, I use File History to save files from our current PC to a new external hard drive.

Please list the tasks required to achieve my goal. Thank you.

Installing Windows 10 on a new hard drive

The USB recovery drive was made with the old hard drive. When installing the new drive, the computer can only boot from the USB recovery drive. It appears to have started in EFI mode.

The system image made off the old hard drive onto an external hard drive is available to see by the USB recovery drive but the Recovery drive says image was made on a BIOS firmware and this computer is using EFI.

I made no changes to the BIOS. I want to recover all my files and partitions.

Why does the old drive boot in BIOS legacy and make images in BIOS but the same old drive made a recovery drive that boots in EFI.

Just take ownership of the folders on the old drive from the external drive enclosure then copy them over. Learn more:

Sounds like a simple task.
Plug in your old HDD, and "open folder to view files".
Open a second folder and navigate to the destination on your new computer where you want to put the pictures.
Locate the pictures on the old HDD and copy/paste to the new destination.

 

Some further tips.

• Buy an external USB drive caddy then you can just plug in that old HDD and use it for backups.
• Beware of booting with the old HDD connected - it probably has active Windows partitions which can confuse the boot process. If you don't need to boot from the old HDD again, you can set partitions to inactive in Diskpart or using a tool like Minitool Partition Wizard.
