Windows 10: Recovering key from Windows recovery image or online profile

My motherboard died unexpectedly so I had to purchase new hardware. My old Windows installation wouldn't work on the new hardware so I had to reinstall Windows. The problem is that I don't have my software key now to activate it. I have a backup image of Windows stored on an external hard drive, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the key from that. I can also see both computers under my Microsoft devices, but while my new computer has a line for serial number currently says "Default String", my old computer doesn't have a line for serial number. Is it possible to recover it from either of these sources?

Guys i am trying to fix my cousins Asus Eee netbook. It has a backup image file that is partitioned on the hard drive but when I go to use it the app will run through a few steps and stop. It is running Vista . Any suggestions?
