  1. Recurring Start, Search and System Tray Problems After Windows Updates

    Hello all!

After every successful windows update my machine runs through the same scenario.

    1. The sound stops working briefly and then is restored.
    2. The Start, Search and System Tray buttons become unresponsive.

Apps on the taskbar and desktop run as normal and the machine functions fine apart from the problems listed above.

Running an SFC scan in powershell finds no integrity violations. Running a DISM /Cleanup /RestoreHealth command in powershell completes successfully but doesn't fix any of the problems. Running the command "Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.Ins
tallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}" in powershell stalls very early during the "Processing" stage and doesn't resume.

The only thing that works is a System Restore to a date before the newest Windows 10 update but this is an inconvenient solution and the problem inevitably rears its head again after a few days.

Has anyone experienced something similar (this is now happening on 3 machines running windows 10 (2 upgrades, 1 clean install) and can anyone suggest a longer-term solution?

    :)

    Windows 10 Freezes on Boot

I started to have the problem after installing a windows update. My laptop starts to load however it freezes on the loading screen. I did a system restore and I initially thought that the problem was fixed. However, the next time I turned on my laptop the
    same problem recurs.

I just did a system restore again in order to access my laptop. However, how do you fix this problem?

windows 10: blank dialog boxes plank popup menus

I have the same issue, which only started after the latest windows update ( Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3176934)).

In my case, after waiting / holding open the dialog box for maybe 10 seconds it does populate, and thereafter they all populate normally.

The problem is that the issue recurs after each reboot.

Recurring Start, Search and System Tray Problems After Windows Updates

Went through the update on 2/10/16 and the next time I booted up the desktop had defaulted to the original tiny size icons and ALL my data was gone.. Had to restore the 2/8 update and everything was restored. Not quite the same, nut similar. This was on my desktop - the same updates worked fine on my Aver Aspire all in one.

Similar to your problem, but different.
    Go figure.

    Anybody have any ideas?

@eaf14131: as you have two PCs, one of which demonstrates the problem, one doesn't, I suggest you compare what the difference is in programs running in the background, whether that be startups or services. I suggest trying some methodical tests as follows.

A number of people report sudden problems with their taskbar/Win 10 start menu/ left clicking or some associations reverting to MS default after an update - no clear identified cause is known as far as I and others are aware. And many don't have these problems.

We do know that a few old version programs cause associations to revert to MS defaults.

So it could be that something installed is interfering and causing your problem.
Therefore you could try a clean boot on both machines, then repeat the update, for example.
I suggest before trying this process you create a disk image of what you have now using either Macrium Reflect (free) or Veeam Endpoint Backup, and external disk - plus create their boot disk.

Disk imaging is an invaluable thing to use routinely anyway, and has rescued many from disaster, also providing a full backup.

Lo & behold - when I shut down yesterday, the update re-downloaded automatically and everything works fine now (for the moment)

    Thanks for the suggestions
