Windows 10: red x on defender shield, How do i remove it, Scanned it said virus was removed. win 10

I had a virus severe defender removed it.....But it still shows a red x on task bar defender shield.So what do i do is my PC still at risk? How doi clear the red x?Thanks Gil

Windows Defender successfully detected all three versions of the EICAR test virus from the rexswain site. When I go to Control Panel, System and Security, Security and Maintenance, Security, the only thing listed under Virus Protection is "Windows Defender
is helping to protect your PC". The WD Shield does revert to all white after I restart the PC. The red circle with X does not always appear after a full WD scan but often enough to raise the question "what does it mean?" I do a full scan every day.

We didn’t have the white WD icon until the Anniversary Update…I’ve never seen the “icon” issue that you have and I do not know why you are occasionally seeing it since your WD seems to be working okay.

Sometimes remnants from a prior security program cause glitches with WD. You might try running the appropriate software removal tools for any antivirus programs that were ever on the computer. List of

And sometimes these unexplained “anomalies” on computer programs seem to resolve themselves.

It’s your decision but (IMO) a daily full scan is “overkill.” WD will periodically run an autoscan when needed. Redirecting
IMO an occassional scan with Malwarebytes Free is better in case you’re concerned that WD may have missed something. I’ve never run a full scan on my Win 10 and haven’t run one on my Win 7 in a couple of years…I do run occasional Quick Scans though.

If you’re concerned about this unexplained behavior of the WD icon to the point you are not comfortable using WD, you might prefer to install a third party program which should disable WD to prevent software conflicts. There are a number of viable alternatives
– free or paid.
