  1. Reformatting ex-RAID 5 hard disks

I have 3 hard disks 1TB Hitachi, which were RAID 5 configured in an old PC with a failed motherboard. I want to reformat them and sell them, but I ran into a problem. In the PC I was using c. 7 years old, Windows 10 clean recent installation, UEFI bios I got "data error cyclic redundancy check" when I tried to initialize one of the drives. I tried both file system options, for which, by the way, there are two entries -- I guess because I set up the RAID with partitions likely, but I don't remember for certain. Couldn't run CHKDSK on it presumably because a drive letter hasn't been assi

I have 3 hard disks (1TB Hitachi), which were RAID 5 configured in an old PC with a failed motherboard. I want to reformat them and sell them, but I ran into a problem.

In the PC I was using (c. 7 years old, Windows 10 clean recent installation, UEFI bios) I got "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" when I tried to initialize one of the drives. I tried both file system options, for which, by the way, there are two entries -- I guess because I set up the RAID with partitions (likely, but I don't remember for certain). Couldn't run CHKDSK on it presumably because a drive letter hasn't been assigned.

    What else can I try?

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out! I'm Microsoft user like you.

Please try to connect this Disk to any other port on Motherboard then boot your computer into safe mode then try to Re-Format disk.

If issue still persists then try to attach the Disks to any other Different computer then try to re-format them.

In case of additional questions, reach out back to me, and I will be happy to help and try our best to resolve your issue.

    Best Regards,

    Prakash

    Would raid 5 be right?

raid 5 one drive can fail. with any number of disks.
your onboard raid 5 is equal to all of the crappy cards people are suggesting.
i would use your onboard or splurge for a hardware RAID controller. that will be around 300$ though.
