Windows 10: Registry permission issue HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Access denied

Hi everyone,

I have a nasty permissions issue when writing the the Windows Registry.

1. How did I noticed it?
When installing Adobe products, they end in Error 160: Access denied writing to the registry to a specific key (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT aka. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Classes)

2. How do I reproduce?

I have Windows 10 20H2. I tried to use the command prompt reg command to simulate what Adobe is doing based on the log above and have the same outcome. Which means this is really a permission issue here.

On other PCs running Windows 7 or Windows 10 2004 The operation succeedes. No issues.

Interestingly enough, if I use regedit.exe to perform the SAME operation, it succeedes in both creating, deleting, or changing the default value. Both are ran as Administrator.

3. What did I try to fix?
I tried setting permissions manually for all users on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Classes key and/or HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT but the same issue occurs.
I tried using tweaking.com Windows Repair to reset all permissions, but it doesn't seem to help either.

Any suggestions are very welcome.

2. What is the complete error message?

This issue could have occurred due to these reasons:

After following the steps suggested, I get the message "Access denied" in command prompt.

Please advise how to allow permission.

If yes, you may try following the suggestion of CarrotMuseum on this
thread about adding the site to the trusted list.
