Windows 10: Reinstall Win10 over OEM Win8.1?

Hi all,

So, I have just purchased all parts for a desktop build and want to repurpose my old MSI GT60-0NE. My question is, can I do a clean Win10 install and use the OEM key to activate it? Or will it be declined because it was an 8.1 key?

Ideally I'd like to just use the recovery media I created but as the screen has been removed (died, didn't want to pay $400aud to replace it) it will not display on a monitor from BIOS...

And i think it desperately needs a clean install. I was recently trying to play Star Citizen on it (rather unsuccessfully) and it Bluescreen crashed. Upon restart the fonts are all weird (look like they're stuck between resolutions) but all images and video are fine. No thumbnails are loading for media files. The secondary HDD has dismounted and it takes ages for files to delete and for the folders to refresh afterwards. I've reinstalled chipset drivers, reinstalled nVidia drivers, rebuilt indexing...

Win8 OEM is now Win10 OEM??? How Come?

So, I did that thing again where you go back to what your PC came with, in my case it is Win8.1, and then you feel bored so you upgrade to Windows 10 again. I remember doing this three times so far--and last two times I did not see Windows 8 OEM license
shown as OEM in Windows 10. Is this weird? I mean, your OEM license from win8 shouldn't transfer to win10(from what I have read on the internet). But, correct me if I am wrong.

I upgraded this PC way passed the allowed free upgrade time period. hehehe... and, it did go through smoothly. No drivers issues, no BSOD, no apps crashing whatsoever. Running smooth like a peanut-butter.

I have another same desktop ASUS G30AB, and it was upgraded to Win10 during the free upgrade timeslot, but that PC doesn't show OEM in its product ID. Maybe, I should run the Win8 to Win10 process on it again.

 

Upgrade from win8 to win10

I have already upgrade from win8 to win10 before 29 July 2016. After that my HDD is broken, I have to install windows on my new SSD. I use same key which I use to upgrade from win8 to win10 to install win8 (Niow it's 8.1). Today, I want to upgrade win10
and I have some question.

1. Is there a upgrade directly from win8.1 to win10 ??

2. Can I use my win8 key to install win10 using windows10 installation media (with clean installation).

Upgrading OEM Win10 Home to MSDN Win10 Pro

Moving to a new PC that I'm building myself. Currently running Dell OEM Win10 Home. New PC will have Win10 Pro, MSDN (multi-activation or retail keys) version.


My backup software can do a "system transfer" that will allow me to transfer everything (OS and applications) to the new computer.


Should I upgrade from OEM Home to MSDN Pro on the old computer and then transfer everything to the new computer?


Or just install Win10 PRO MSDN on the new computer and use the backup software vendor's application transfer program to move the applications and registry entries?


My goals are:

1. Not have any "dinosaur bones" either from the OS on my SSD from the old OEM Home version on the new PRO version

1. Not have to reinstall and reconfigure everything (which would take about a week)
