Windows 10: Reinstalling windows on a new SSD

Hi everyone,


I just want to be shure that i'm doing my reinstallation process corectly so here's the idea :


- I curently have an old SSD with my windows 10 installed on it, activated with a key i recieved from my school quite a long time ago.

- I created a USB drive to install windows, from my curent computer, using the MediaCreationTool https://www.microsoft.com/fr-fr/software-download/windows10

- My plan is to buy a new SSD, and install windows on this new one using this USB drive i just created.


I suppose that i have to :

1. Shut down my pc, unplug my SSD and my storage HDDs.
2. plug in the new SSD
3. Plug in the USB i created earlier
4. Boot my pc, chose in the BIOS to boot on the USB drive
5. Follow the installation steps
6. Shut down the Pc, replug my HDD drives.

I have two questions :

1. Do i need to find the key i used to install windows BEFORE installing the new sdd ?
   In other terms, will the USB i created needthe activation key ? Or will it work on its own, knowing i created it from my existing windows license
2. How do i do to clean my old SSD without creating a booting conflict with the new one ?

Step 2: shutdown the computer then install the new SSD.

Step 3: Boot from the recovery drive and follow the instructions to reinstall Windows 10.

Another option is to clone the current drive, then restore it on the new SSD:

Step 2: create a new bootable copy of Windows 10. The Windows 10 USB you have is the original version of Windows 10 which quite outdated.

Step 3: Shutdown the computer, remove the HDD then install the SSD

When you upgraded from a previous version of Windows or receive a new computer preinstalled with Windows 10, what happened is the hardware (your PC) will get a digital entitlement, where a unique signature of the computer will be stored on Microsoft
Activation Servers. The Windows 7 or Windows 8 genuine license you were previously running will be exchanged for a diagnostics key.

Anytime you need to reinstall Windows 10 on that machine, just proceed to reinstall Windows 10. It will automatically reactivate. You will prompted to enter a product key a couple times through the installation, click I don't have
a key and Do this later.

There is no need to know or get a new key, but if you have issues with Digital Licensing or the Activation Troubleshooter, you can utilize an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key you already own to
reactivate if necessary. or use the reset function in Windows 10.

Reinstall Windows 10 to new hard drive

• Are you trying to reinstall Windows 8 or Windows 10?
• If you already upgraded to Windows 10, were you able to create a new copy of the recovery drive?
