Windows 10: Remote desktop and multiple monitors in Windows 10

In common with many others I was horrified to find that Windows 7 pro, which advertised support for RDP, did not support multiple monitors. I needed Ultimate for that.

What's the story in Windows 10? Can I use RDP with multiple monitors in Windows 10 pro? And can I connect to a Windows 7 pro laptop using a dual monitor Windows 10 Pro desktop?

Hi Peter,

This might be compatibility and limitation issues. Since you have two different operating system, one is Windows 10 Pro and the other one is Windows 10 Home, they may have different limitations and restrictions when it comes to using it in remote desktop.
It might also be an issue with monitor spanning. You can check these articles and see if it can help you in resolving the issue:

Remote Desktop App support for multi-monitor display setups?

No, this is a KB for connecting more than one LOCAL monitor. I am looking for a way to make my remote desktop session in Windows 10 to span multiple monitors.

 

At present I am running three monitors without a problem. . .having said that there is one fault and that is not being able to use a different picture/wallpaper on each monitor. To get around this problem I use Display Fusion ( I know there are some folks that just can't get over the fact that a third party program is needed to display separate wallpapers on each monitor. As to Remote desktop goes don't use it so I cannot comment on it's us. . .*Smile

 

I connect to multiple Win7 Pro machines with 1, 2 and 3 monitors with my dual monitor Win 10 Pro setup with no issues.

Just want to be sure but when you say you connect to multiple Win7 Pro machines with multiple monitors, can you display the multiple monitors on your Win 10 Pro setup? That is, if you were to connect to a Win 7 Pro machine with 2 monitors, will both monitors display on both of your Win 10 monitors?

The issue with Win 7 Pro in the past has been that you can connect to the system, but only use one monitor for display even though both systems (remote and local) have two monitors.

No, you don't get multi monitor view with RDP. Works just like Win7. On the rare occasion I need to view the multiple monitors I use AnyDesk AnyDesk - The World's Fastest Remote Desktop Application

 

Thanks for the quick reply and confirmation. AnyDesk looks good except I want to remote desktop to my Windows box from a Mac (which AnyDesk doesn't currently support).
