  2. Keep Remote Desktop going if Host falls asleep

    Hi,

I am using my home PC (Win 10) to connect to my headless Server (Win 2016) via Remote Desktop.

If my home PC goes to sleep then my Remote Desktop session pauses and then resumes once my home PC wakes up.
This is quite annoying especially if something is running on the server and then my home PC goes to sleep. I don't want to keep my home PC on all the time just to keep the remote desktop session alive. Is there a way to keep the remote desktop session alive whilst my home PC sleeps.

The only solution to come to mind is to run TightVNC instead. Any other suggestions?

  3. Remote Desktop vs. Internet Remote Desktop (Internet and LAN)

Remote Desktop works in exactly the same way over the Internet as over an internal network. However, when working over the Internet, you must take some extra steps in order to establish a connection:

    • The client must know the host's external IP address.
    • You must create a tunnel for port 3389 on the host's router.
    • The host must have a fixed internal IP address.
    • The host's router must direct port 3389 packets to the host's internal IP address.
    • The hosts's firewall must allow port 3389 packets.
BTW, "Host" is the machine that is being taken over, often a PC at the work place.

"Client" is your own machine, often the PC at your home.

    Remote Desktop Wake Host PC?

Remote Desktop with host PC at Log in Screen

I have been using remote desktop on these computers for months. I have noticed that I can not remote into the host PC after a remote restart.

Yesterday I went to the host computer site and restarted the PC and left it at the log in screen.

I find that I can not remote into the PC while it is in this state. I can Ping it so I know it is running.

Is there a setting that I need to change? Both my Windows Surface and my Desk top PC are running Windows 10 and are up to date.

    Thank you
