  1. Remote Desktop Windows 11 not working on lan network, no internet

As the title states, I can narrow this down to remote desktop not working when it doesn't have internet connection.I'm trying to connect an iPad running the new Windows app on a local LAN only network without internet. I'm connecting to a Lenovo Yog 6 running Windows 11 Pro. If both are on a network with internet, they connect no problem so I know it's not an authentication/user account issue. If I'm on my local network I'm simply adding a PC in the Windows app, typing in the local IP say 10.0.0.11 with my credentials and trying to connect and it's giving me the "Unable to connect: Unable to c

  2. Remote Desktop vs. Internet Remote Desktop (Internet and LAN)

Remote Desktop works in exactly the same way over the Internet as over an internal network. However, when working over the Internet, you must take some extra steps in order to establish a connection:

    • The client must know the host's external IP address.
    • You must create a tunnel for port 3389 on the host's router.
    • The host must have a fixed internal IP address.
    • The host's router must direct port 3389 packets to the host's internal IP address.
    • The hosts's firewall must allow port 3389 packets.
BTW, "Host" is the machine that is being taken over, often a PC at the work place.

"Client" is your own machine, often the PC at your home.

  3. Remote desktop and wake on lan. ?

Hello TC, thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community. I am here to help and provide assistance with any questions or concerns you may have.

Yes, you can remotely access a Windows 11 Pro PC in sleep mode. Here's how to make it work:

Remote Desktop: Ensure Remote Desktop is enabled on the target PC. Follow this guide: https://pureinfotech.com/enable-remote-desktop-....

Wake-on-LAN (WoL): Configure WoL on the target PC. This involves settings in the BIOS/UEFI and your network adapter. An excellent guide can be found here: How to Enable Wake On Lan in Windows 11: Remotely Turn On PC.

Note: This is a non-Microsoft website. The page appears to be providing accurate, safe information. Watch out for ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

    The steps are pretty straightforward:

Send a WoL 'Magic Packet': Use a WoL utility on another device on your network to send a special network packet that will wake your target PC. Many free tools are available, or you can configure your router for WoL forwarding if accessing from outside your local network.

Connect with Remote Desktop: Once the target PC is awake, establish a Remote Desktop connection as you normally would.

A very useful tip from experience is to consider assigning a static IP address to your target PC for easier WoL targeting.

Let me know if you'd like assistance with any specific steps or have further questions!

Remote Desktop Windows 11 not working on lan network, no internet

Remote desktop software but specifically for this?

Is it on your LAN? If so why not use Windows' built-in Remote Desktop Protocol?

That's what I do with my headless server and VMs.

I even use it to access my server from anywhere in the country when I travel through an OpenVPN connection I have to my network.

If you don't need the features and thus overhead of extra remote software, RDP is an excellent and easy choice for LAN. With a little effort and networking comprehension, WAN-side RDP access is good as well!
