Remove Get Windows 10 Icon from Taskbar in Windows 7 and 8.1

Maybe my bad eyesight meant I missed it but I didn't spot the caution, if one has already reserved a copy of Windows 10, the reservation should be cancelled before doing any of the options to stop W10 being offered again.
Also option 4, Windows will immediately offer that update again, it can then be hidden.

    Hey Peter, *Smile

You don't need to cancel your reservation before removing the W10 icon unless you just wanted to. This is only to remove the W10 icon to no longer see it.

Yeah, after you uninstall the update in Option 4 in Windows 7/8.1, you would want to hide the update to prevent it from being installed again. If the update doesn't show up immediately, it should show up after checking for updates.

OK thanks Shawn. I've hidden it on my main 7 until I am absolutely sure the upgrade in my other 7 and my 8.1 are OK....when the time comes.

After deliberating I used the registry tweak to remove the icon and all has been great for what, four weeks or so. KB3035583 was installed way back in May and yet today its being offered again... which I'm not installing... and which I assume if I do will once again bring the icon back.

Same here, except I used disabling the scheduled tasks in the task manager for both Window 7 and 8.1. I have no plans to update these systems to Windows 10.

    Quote from the KB article:
Really, I do have the previously released KB3035583 installed... What gives?

    And this...
I do not have a problem with the listed MS products. Maybe not registering for a free copy of Windows 10 is a problem...

    Hi

I have Windows 7 SP1 and have the icon "Get Windows" in the system tray of all users.

Which method should I use to eliminate this icon in each account and to prevent the automatic upgrade to Windows 10 when it will be available?

    Thanks

    Bye

    Hello Balubeto,

OPTION THREE would be the recommended one to use that will get applied to all users on the PC. *Smile

I've tried to delete (not hide) Microsoft's Windows 10 notification ad, located in the system tray by several methods, including editing the registry. Techniques were taken from here and elsewhere.

Each time it continues to come back immediately upon rebooting, which leads me to suspect KB3035583 may not be the only thing creating the icon.

One thing that makes it look suspicious is how long it takes for the computer to shutdown/reboot after deleting the KB. My system takes about 30 seconds to shutdown, 15-20 to configure on the way out, and another 15-20 to reconfigure following reboot. That seems excessive to remove a simple icon.

Has anyone else gotten the impression that more than this KB is involved, and what are you basing it on?

Any leads as to what else is involved?

Hello Spikey, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not sure what you did, but if you uninstalled the update, did you hide it afterwards to prevent it from being reinstalled in Windows Update again?

OPTION THREE is the best way to disable the GWX icon.

Brink, the download links to the KB3035583 updates (listed in Option 4) for Win7/Win8.1 still work but they are outdated.
Microsoft revised those updates in mid-July 2015. Here are the July 2015 versions of the KB3035583 updates:

    KB3035583 for Win7 SP1 (x64) (x86) - July 2015
    KB3035583 for Win8.1 (x64) (x86) - July 2015

By the way, KB3035583 for Win7 requires Win7 SP1 & IE11. Have Windows 7 but not Internet Explorer 11 and no KB3035583 update will be offered from Windows Update to Win7 users that have IE8, IE9 or IE10 as I confirmed this behavior myself on a bunch of Win7 computers.

I'll be using Option Four as well as the reg tweak here "Real Fast" as you will notice from the second system having seen a 10/7 dual boot with an image of 7 restored onto the second drive added in once 10 was already on as the upgrade and then clean install there.

I didn't see that the first time around on the main build however but on September 1st clicked on the 10 app itself and then saw the download was available screen come up as you saw previously.

Now what if 10 is already in the works? If the timing is off and you just happen to be a little late at seeing the 10 app disabled or the update removed entirely how do you prevent the upgrade from taking place and being successful? Well you may be too late to stop the download but...

The same thing that can prevent 10 from going on as a planned upgrade can also be used to prevent the unintended as well! Initially trying to see 10 dual booted with 7 not ready to dump 7 any time soon I had a little problem regarding those two additional storage drives and there you go for hose of you who "intentionally" may forget to see any of those unplugged?! *chuckle

Now to remove and disable the 10 app remotely first and then onto the main build's dual boot with the 7 install there!

So far as my 8.1.1 Pro > This is really starting to anger me and that's the nicest way I can state it. For years I've always had my WU set to auto install updates, but now with what I consider this PUSHING Windows 10 on me/us I changed it to "Download, but let me decide". I performed steps 2, 3, and 4 of this tutorial to be sure to hide all aspects of the 10 upgrade offer of which it did. Lo and behold this morning I boot up in 8.1 to find a warning on my splash screen that updates are ready to install, which it should warn me, especially for Defender. I goes to WU only to find this:

Ugh! What in the world is this?!!! Did they sneak a different update that starts this process?!! I hid update KB3035583 as seen below. I think I’m a fairly reasonable man and I’m not against promoting a product, but this is getting out of hand. Offer it to me, give me a button that gives me a choice > Yes > or > No. Not at this time > Then go away!

There were many updates recently for 8.1 that I let go through > #1) I hadn’t read anything about a sneak > #2) I don’t need to, nor should I have to go through umpteen updates to filter. Anyone know what’s going on with this? Did they sneak another one by?

If so, it would have to be one of these:
