Add or Remove "Play with Windows Media Player" Context Menu in Windows 10


Information To play media files with Windows Media Player no matter the default app, you can select the file(s) you would like to play, right click or press and hold on the selected file(s), and click/tap on Play with Windows Media Player. The files should then open and play in Windows Media Player.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Play with Windows Media Player context menu from media files for all users in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove this context menu.


EXAMPLE: "Play with Windows Media Player" context menu






Here's How:

1. Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.


2. To Add "Play with Windows Media Player" Context Menu to Media Files
NOTE: This is the default setting.
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

3. To Remove "Play with Windows Media Player" Context Menu from Media Files
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6. When prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

How can I remove Windows Media Player from the context menu?

As per the title, how can I remove Windows Media Player from the right-click context menu?

 

Folders keep opening in new windows in Windows 10

The Downloads and Pictures folder context menus seem to be identical to each other; however, the folders inside Downloads and Pictures have different context menus.

The folders located in Pictures have Cast to device, Play with Windows Media Player and
Add to Windows Media Player list.

My folders in Videos contain the same above, but my Downloads don't.

What are you seeing instead?

 

I am trying to add it. It looks like it did before I did anything:

 

The context menu should be there by default.

Check in "Windows Features" to see if you have these two items below checked for having WMP turned on.

Both of those are checked and enabled. Does it have to do with default players? Mine is iTunes or should it matter?

 

Normally, it wouldn't matter what your default player is.

Did you previously use any other method to remove the context menu? If so, it may have used a different method that can't be restored using this tutorial.

 

No I sure haven't. I don't usually mess with this stuff. I mean I was messing with WinAero Tweaker last night but this was gone way before that.

I've read that some people install fresh copies of Windows 10 and it doesn't have this option.

 

I've just tested this on two of my systems, 14393.1593 and 15063.540. Both already had WMP turned on in 'Windows Features' but neither had the context menu there by default. 'Add_Play_with_Windows_Media_Player_context_menu.reg' did not add the context menu on either system, even after a restart.

Personally that's no hardship though, having previously used 'Open With' to browse and find WMP. So it (and others I've 'opened with' before) are available at a right-click as well as the default Microsoft apps.

I've updated the Add_Play_with_Windows_Media_Player_context_menu.reg file in the tutorial.

If you like, download and merge the new version to see if that may help now. I've included another method to it for restoring the context menu.

 

AHA! So there is something wrong with that regedit file. Maybe someone can fix it? I did some research and found this is where context menu handlers are. I know you can hit open with but I want the Play With option.

I used the removal reg and your new adding reg also rebooted with nothing working.

I'm not sure what method may have removed it for you, but you could use the method Bree posted above as a workaround to open the file with WMP without setting WMP as the default app.

Step 1. Open with > choose another app




Step 2, click More apps





Step 3. scroll down to the bottom of the list to find Look for another app on this PC





Step 4. browse and find Windows Media Player wmplayer.exe then click Open
