Windows 10: Remove Win 10 1511 Upgrade File(s)?

Disk Cleanup can remove most of that. You have to click the "clean up system files" button.

 

+1, and it's a lot easier than using all of those commands.

 

So I have tried using the Disk Cleanup feature and it removed the majority of the windows.old file, however the file is still there on my C drive. I would like to get rid of the file if possible, any help is greatly appreciated! *Biggrin

This thread had a lot of helpful information, however I still couldn't resolve my issue with my windows.old file not deleting. I just wanted to share this thread in case other people were also having difficulties trying to delete their windows.old file.

My main issue is that the system thinks the folder is in use and won't allow me to delete it. The files in use are "intcdaud.sys"

 

My post #14 worked for me. Also, DiskCleanup will NOT remove the $Windows.~WS files, but my 3 command lines that you put in an elevated Command prompt will...for me anyway. Just be sure to change the directory names.

 

Bunny, but DiskCleanup will not remove $Windows.~WS.

 

One of the folders can be deleted manually with the right click feature. Sorry that I didn't mention that earlier.

 

After upgrading. It is always bettter to run Disk Cleanup in extended mode and it'll show a lot more options and prompt you to delete all the remmants.
Open Admin Command Prompt and run:
%SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

Example of Disk Cleanup Extended mode, 25 options. Check them all except Windows Setup Log File:

You're welcome. In addition, also run from Admin Command Prompt:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

To delete all the obsolete store components. You'll be surprised that you can reclaim quite a bit of space.

I used Unlocker to get rid of $Windows.~BT and $Windows.~WS. I always have Unlocker installed so using it for stuff like this has become automatic.
