  1. Removing characters from filenames

    Hello

Apologises if this question is repeated somewhere,

How can I remove a series of numbers and words in bulk from a folder of word documents please?

Each filename contains different numbers and words but they follow the same format of:

    (9 numbers)-(5 numbers)_(word)_(word)_(random numbers)

    An example is:

    123456789-12345_John_Smith_124578965874

If it helps, the part I need to delete is at the beginning of the filename which is:

    123456789-12345_John_Smith

I can have 100+ files to rename and at the moment, it is all done manually so any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Laura

    :)

    better character support in filenames

Do you think there will come a time when windows 10 can support as many characters in the filename as Mac or linux?

Bit of a deal breaker integrating windows into my mac environment at the moment as many filenames have what windows would call invalid characters.

Will it be possible if they eventually replace the file explorer with a new version?

64 Character folder + filename limit on DVD/CD's?

We just got an email from IT regarding backing up projects to CD/DVD... that there is a 64 Character folder/path + filename limit on DVD/CD's.

So if a pathname + filename on the network is greater than 64 characters, the file will be forced to the root of the disk and truncated if the filename itself is more than 64 characters.

Is this true? Or limited to a specific OS or format of the DVD/CD?

EDIT: Found this thead, but it's OLD (2002): http://discussions.hardwarecentral.com/archive/index.php/t-92367.html

Extend NTFS 260 characters filename path limit

    Hello,

I am trying to use the Windows 10 feature promoted
    here
    and
    here
to extend the filename path limit beyond 260 characters (enable long paths in gpedit.msc, add LongPathsEnabled registry in regedit), but even if I follow the instructions to the letter, the limit still won't be removed.

Has anyone met this behaviour? What can I do to remove the limit?

I am using Windows 10 Pro, Version 1607.
