Removing corrupted files and laptop stuck when trying to repair

    Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me with this. I have a PC Specialist gaming laptop, with an SSD C drive and a 2TB D drive which is where I store most of my games. I noticed that when I was running a game the other day that it started stuttering and loading was erratic, and when it finally froze I tried running Malware Bytes and Spybot S & D. MB said there was Malware detected so I restarted and set the repair into motion - however when scanning and repairing the D drive, it got stuck at 73% and after about 15 hours I gave up.....

When I right click the D drive and do a check it says there is a disk error but again, when I try to repair it gets stuck near the end. I did find a corrupted file (turns out to be a mod on a game) but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to delete it. I cannot even delete it using cmd line.

Any help with this would be appreciated, as currently I cannot play any games from Steam as the library is on the D drive, and it doesn't seem to be able to transfer any of them to C without crashing.

    Thanks in advance
    Michael

    :)

  2. Windows 10 spotlight

So to solve this I have to make a new profile, isn't it? What about the corrupt files not repaired by sfc scan? Yesterday I used chkdsk C:/ d / r command to check corrupt files but it stucked twice at 13%. So are there corrupt files of windows? How can I
    remove them?

Thanks for your help Removing corrupted files and laptop stuck when trying to repair :)

  3. Surface pro hangs during update. Now does not boot. Chkdsk stuck for 30 hours

This is the original Surface Pro. I just started the Surface Pro update but even before it started, the machine froze. I had to force shutdown(None of the keys on the keyboard were responding). After this, the computer was stuck in the Surface logo with
the circling dots. Made a recovery disk. Booted with pen drive. Nothing found in Automatic repair.

Chkdsk gets stuck at 46% (Step 2 of 3 - Verifying indexes). Left it on for more than 30 hours. Still stuck. No error, no progress.

Tried to salvage my data out. Started a copy of all content in C:\Users\<user_profile>. Copy hangs on a particular file of Appdata in MicrosoftEdge. This makes since because I shutdown the PC when I was using Edge. Its possible that the file got corrupted.
Tried deleting that particular file. Hangs indefinitely.

Tried System restore. It says disk is corrupt and starts repairing device. Again gets stuck.

Tried system refresh to keep files but remove apps and reset Windows. It says the drive containing Windows is locked. Asks me to unlock drive and retry the repair.

I have not tried resetting the PC by removing all files. Want to know if there is any last thing I can try before I try that. Also, not sure if that will work because PC refresh reported that the disk is locked (Don't know why this the case).

I don't think the SSD is bad here as it happened immediately after a bad shutdown. Also, did not have any issues before this.

It is strange that chkdsk does not timeout if it finds a corrupt file.

<PS: I am a Microsoft employee and can work with you if you need to collect some logs/dumps etc>

Removing corrupted files and laptop stuck when trying to repair

    Hi, first check your drive.

    1. Please check your disk. Download and install Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of its GUI
to post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon to the left of the video icon above your post

    2. Check your file system (was this what you tried - or equivalent?)
    From a command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt]
    chkdsk D: /F
    Post back the result

    Thanks

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste these commands:

    1) winver (view the pop up and post your windows version and build into the post)

    2) sfc /scannow

    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    4) chkdsk /scan

    5) msconfig (then view the pop up)
Move the dot from normal startup to selective startup
    Uncheck load startup items
    Click on the service tab
In the left lower corner check hide all Microsoft services
On the right lower side click disable all
    apply/ok and do not reboot

    6) taskmgr (then view the pop up)
    Click on the startup tab
Click on the status column so that enable rises to the top
For each row that has enable right click and change to disable

    7) shutdown /r

Upon reboot you should be in clean boot

    Please post into the forum
    1) winver windows version and build

Most often Malwarebytes and Spybot are run manually. What is your always on antivirus software? If possible run windows defender offline. It will reboot, load, and then run a quick scan.

Removing corrupted files and laptop stuck when trying to repair

This is the screenshot from Hard Disk Sentinel (focussing on the D drive):

I tried doing a chkdsk but it said I would need to unmount the drive to do that, and I don't feel comfortable doing that, to be honest.

Hi, It's not worth continuing with that disk as it is, according to that. You can't rely on. It appears to be failing.

You said it was a 2Tb drive- HD Sentinel reports it as 1Tb.

Feel free to do other checks and use other programs as well if you wish.

With Hard Disk Sentinel, you can also do a surface test if you are still not convinced:
Select the disk, click Disk, click Surface Test.
    (Should take a while).

Ah, yes it is 1TB, sorry - thought it was 2 TB for some reason...

Yeah, it's quite a dismal result.....apparently now it's not even mounting, there's just a question mark against the image and it's not recognising it on HDS anymore...
