I need a method or tool to find duplicate image files and decide which to remove. Ideally by image name across several folder trees on one drive and also to find image files that are duplicates even if not with the same file name.

What's the most accurate software to detect duplicate files?

Consider using one that does this:
-scans the computer and lists duplicate files based on Byte for Byte Comparison or Advanced Scan (CRC, SHA-1 hash). It can find duplicates of any files: documents, music, video, images etc. (MD5 is said to be 'near enough for practical use'- whatever that means).

- and has appropriate filters and options to limit the search (by path, file type, size....), and offer a review before deletion (think pictures, music).

However, most good ones are not free.
Another problem is that many don't state whether they use the matching criteria on their web site.

It's hard to make a general recommendation as some tools specialise in matching media files, for example.
There are plenty of comparison lists.

Note that Ccleaner's comparison has byte-for-byte comparison off by default, which is perhaps why it doesn't seem so accurate.

Which phone are you using?



Duplicate images might be because of software issue or there might really be duplicate images on your phone or memory card.

To solve this

1.

Move all your images on your phone to your computer, restart your phone, copy back all images back to your phone. If you think there are duplicate images on your memory card, follow step 2



2.

You can search for duplicate files on your memory card by installing glary utilities on your PC(Search the web to download), search for duplicates and delete one of the duplicates.

Thank you for the suggestion. I need to see a list of duplicate files and select those I want to eliminate. Does the program you suggested compare file content or do they simply point out duplicate
file names?
