Windows 10: Removing "Work or school account" when "This PC isn't joined to a domain."

Hi folks -


The administrative Microsoft/personal account on our home PC somehow got associated with an Azure AD a few months back, and in the process this account now shows both the Microsoft account and a "Work or school account" under "Email & accounts" in Windows Settings. I was first alerted to this issue by repeated notifications that the password on the work or school account was about to expire.


The Azure AD no longer exists - I deleted the tenant completely using Azure AD portal, once I figured how to gain administrative access to manage it using portal.office.com.


How do I remove this account/registration from the PC, though? Do I just need to wait a while, now that the Azure AD no longer exists? Or can the registration be removed proactively?


I've tried -


- Under "Access work or school" in Settings, clicking "Disconnect" on the "Connected to <domain>'s Azure AD" entry. That just results in "This PC isn't joined to a domain."

- Running DsRegCmd /status and DsRegCmd /leave /debug. Both of these command seem to show approximately the same information and trouble as Settings does - WorkplaceJoined:YES on the user state, a "Work Account 1" that appears to be what I'd like to remove, and "AzureADJoined:NO" for device state.


I will not try -


- Converting this account to a local account temporarily to try disconnecting there. I will not do this because I don't want to suffer any other later consequences of this account temporarily being local. It has never been local before. It seems logical there's another solution.

Can't remove a Work or School account from Windows 10

This scenario occurs when you sign in with a personal Microsoft Account, and then add a Work or School organisational (Office 365) account.

The aim is to remove a Work or School Account from the PC, so that a different Work or School account can be used.

You should be signing in with a Personal Microsoft Account, and the PC should not be on a domain to reproduce this.

Steps to repro

1. Create a login on the PC using your Personal Microsoft Account

2. Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school

3. Click "Connect"

4. Enter the details for your Work or School Organisational Account (NOT another Personal MSA)

This will then pull down the policy etc. and link the account to Windows. Seems to work fine, but then if you want to remove the account it is impossible. Try this:

1. Open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school

2. Click on the Organisational account you added previously

3. Click on "Disconnect"

4. A prompt will appear asking if you are sure

5. Click Yes

6. A further prompt will appear asking you to disconnect from the organisation

7. Click Disconnect

8. A yellow error message says "This PC isn't joined to a domain"

This does not appear to be the correct behaviour - It should be possible to remove the account here. The message is technically correct...The device is not on a domain, but this should not stop the account being removed.

What I am trying to do, is disconnect one account and add a different one. Adding two Work or School accounts does not seem to work, so removing the old one first is the only option but this is impossible due to the above mentioned error.

Anybody know how to get around this without wiping the whole device?

I just finished clean installing Windows 10 Enterprise build 17093 in a VM using a local account, and it still has the same steps in the tutorial for me.

Is your PC already joined to a domain?

 

Can same PC have domain-joined and non-domain-joined accounts?

Can the same PC have one account set up that's domain-joined (to work), and another personal account that's NOT domain-joined?

I'm guessing the answer is more likely no, since domain seems to be a machine-level and not an account-level setting.

What I'd like to be able to do is use my personal PC at home, with its large monitor, to connect to my work domain occasionally and work remotely. But I don't want corporate IT to take over my personal PC. ;-)
