Windows 10: Repair Install: PC=2004 MCT=20H2. Fails.Have new MB & CPU. Complicated

Actual Win 10 version is 19041.867
MCT is 20H2.

I use Reflekt to clone my boot drive.

Started off with 3rd gen MB and CPU.
MB started giving trouble. Speaker output failed. Ethernet failed (internally, wouldn't let Windows configure it.) Then it decided that with restart or rest it would not go further than "Press Del or F2 to enter setup" Pressing either key would not enter setup. Nor would it go any further into boot. Had to physically switch off and on to get it going.

Then along came KB4601554. With this installed it can take hours of retries to get Windows to boot. Remove the update, Windows boots just fine.

Was told by technical salesman that his PC does the same, also 3rd generation. MB is anyways kaput, so bought 10th gen MB and CPU.

Booted OK. Let it install KB4601554. No longer boots. Switched to cloned HDD (without KB4601554) and it boots.

Wanted to clone without KB4601554, but Reflekt stuggling. Going to take4 hours to clone 250GB partition.

Decided to try a repair install. Used MCT 20h2. "Install failed."

Any suggestions?

cannot update 20H2 build 19042.662 for last 2 months

There are multiple steps that can be performed to troubleshoot failed upgrades.
An in place upgrade repair if it fails should generate an error message and code that is useful to start the troubleshooting.
So for a failure start an new thread with the error message and code and logs can be collected.
List: antivirus, firewall, drive encryption software

Step #2: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade (I personally use and suggest you use 2004 before trying to upgrade to 20H2/2009 which came after 2004).

Hello everyone,

thanks to some of the suggestions here and to some from other sources I have managed to fix the 0x80070002 error breaking up my feature update to 2004.

For completeness' sake and since it may help others, the following steps worked for me.

1. Download Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website
2. Create a bootable USB drive with the MCT
3. Boot up from this USB Drive
4. Choose install settings, click 'Next', but on the next screen select "Repair your computer" instead of "Install"
5. Choose "Troubleshoot" -> "Startup Repair" and let it finish
6. Restart into Windows and attempt the usual Windows update

It looks like the BCD on my computer had been damaged by the boot loader (Windows 10 + Recovery partition) and running the "Startup Repair" from the installation USB Drive corrected the errors.
