Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    Hi

I am already running on windows 10 version 1511 OS build 10586.873 previously upgraded from Windows 7 and due to some issue I will need to reinstall windows 10 without losing my files and program and so I am currently following this article

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

after I used the media creation tool to download the Windows 10 ISO I run into issue after clicking the setup from the ISO. After the "get important updates" screen, it proceed to "checking your PC" and run into an error "Windows 10 Setup- setup fail to
validate the product key" Because this is a OEM version of Windows 10 I do not have any product key nor did the screen prompt me for any product key"

I run a few google search where most of the issue might look similar but occurred during a upgrade process from Windows 7 or 8.1. I have try a few method from some of the suggestion

    - unjoin the computer from the domain into a work group and login as a local administrator

    - created a ei.cfg file and with the following and copy it into the source folder of the ISO

    [EditionID]

    Professional

    [Channel]

    Retail

    LV]

I really have no other ideas what else to do.

  5. I know that one quite well here for sure! When finally getting that first upgrade on many things didn't seem to go well like getting the antivirus software on even the 2016 beta version which would have automatically included 10 support refused and crash landed. I said to myself well got to think back about how we used to fix the previous versions and Upgrade to Repair I went and that ran well until finally it came time to go for broke with the fresh full clean install that was going to come anyways! *Biggrin

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    Hello BeonoitSvB,

I would recommend to move them back before doing a repair install. A repair install may break the link for them if you don't. *Sad

  14. What I found so far when running into problems with older programs like Acronis True Image Home 2010 is the need to right click on the main executable to select the "run as administrator" option seen as the second item in the right click menu options. If the program is compatible that will insure a working installation takes place. MS has a Compatibility Center for checking up on all types of programs you can look up when you select the version of Windows. Windows Compatibility Center

With that I found out why 10 and 7 on the remote case I have have to use two different methods to connect online through the modem here! For WiFi access 7 will run from a usb wifi adapter to the separate linksys router while 10 will detect the ethernet cable going direct to the cable modem/router combination. Perhaps now you can see why I have to keep a dual boot going on the portable mini tower in case I take it with me and have to run 7 since not even 8 drivers are found while 7 won't detect and coonect through the ethernet cable for some reason.

That's another mystery to solve there however. What the Upgrade install will do the second time around essentially is fill in the gaps where the initial upgrade left off at not seeing a complete install of 10! As I was explaining to Shawn that leaves a flaky shaky mix up of mishaps waiting to happen and I had to use the upgrade to repair type method to repair that first upgrade in order to see the regular softwares to even go on let alone run well.

Once 10 is activated the first time and if you are not able to replace a shaky mix up with a fresh clean install this is the fast remedy to get 10 running better. It will however require reinstalling most of the programs you saw brought along with the initial upgrade into 10 being replaced by a fresh registry and packing up the program folders into the Windows.old as those are no longer found. But the two options for running as admin and the compatibility center will be a large help once you have seen this type of repair install take place at finding out what will run on 10.

I followed this but it's asking me for a Windows key?? That doesn't show up in the step by step? I got a key viewer software to show me key, entered it and it says not valid? I upgraded from Win7 and the only problem I have is that the windows store will not launch.
