Does this look like your graphics update problem?

If so, use the previous version of the driver and check the ASUS community for similar reports for example.
You will have to block the installation of the newer driver (you can use the appropriate tutorial here in the Tutorial section).
Would be a good idea to ask a question there.

  2. I'll try that, but how do I find the previous version of the driver? The AMD website was confusing (Radeon R6 isn't listed), and it doesn't appear when I search for updates on my computer.

Check your manufacturer's site if Win 10 is supported for your device.

The old driver version used on the Anniversary Build will not be recorded now because all such records naturally disappear when you upgrade.

    Ask on Asus' site...

  4. Repeated Crashes and Boot Errors Apparently Caused by Driver Updates

Finally, good news. I was able to locate an earlier version of the AMD drivers here, and the installation succeeded without a crash. I am trying to run the "show or hide updates" tool in order to block the update to the graphics driver (thus allowing me to lift the general prohibition on automatic driver updates), and so far that hasn't finished searching. Windows Update is also taking a surprisingly long time checking for updates. But the fact that I was able to get this far is hopeful. I'll restart the laptop when I'm finished and report back.

  5. Windows Update completed, and after the restart everything appears as it should be. So I think sticking with the older driver must be the fix. Thanks again for all your help; I am relieved to have this behind me, at least for the time being.

  6. FWIW, my laptop is still running fine. Rarely, when playing video, I get a brief buzz/stall, which always makes me nervous, but it resolves without a crash in about a second. I'm backing up my files frequently and hoping to get through this semester without any more catastrophes.

EDIT: Also want to note that it's been more noticeable today, right after the 2017-10 cumulative update installed.

  8. Repeated Crashes and Boot Errors Apparently Caused by Driver Updates

I don't want to be a hypochondriac or anything, but there has been something else mildly concerning that's started today: black screen lag. When I started the laptop up this morning from its usual nightly hibernation, and the screen didn't come up after a couple minutes, I tried sleeping/unsleeping with the power button a few times and eventually forced a restart. After the Windows loading screen, no login screen popped up, it just stayed black. I left it alone to take a shower, and when I returned, the login screen was finally visible. Since then, every time I've left it alone and the screen automatically goes dark, it will remain dark for several seconds after I hit a button, whereas it used to be nearly instantaneous. Everything else works fine, and the computer runs as smoothly as ever. Checking my update history, I see that last night the KB4049011 and KB4048954 Windows updates installed.

I will have to restart my system soon, and who knows, that may take care of the issue.... But I'm wondering if this another symptom of something off with the graphics card or AMD drivers. I am still holding back drivers updates.

    Hey Borromaeus,
Try disabling AMD/ATI video card ULPS (Ultra Low Power State). Not sure about the return from Hibernate, but it should help to decrease the black screen time on startup.

Open regedit and search for EnableULPS and change the value from 1 to 0, then reboot ... Do NOT change EnableULPS_NA

FYI: AMD/ATI video card driver update will probably change it back to 1

  11. Every now and then the black screen lag comes back, but a restart fixes it. What a restart is not fixing is the repeated failure of the Windows Fall Creators Update (KB4053580) to complete installation. Is this because I'm holding back driver updates, or is it probably something else?

You could inspect the update logs; if it's listed as still needing your PC to be restarted, try uninstalling it via the Control Panel; you can also try manually downloading it from the link in the News section thread for the update and installing it that way.

Do you see any error message?

Is SFC /SCANNOW from an admin prompt successful?

Have you tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter?

No error message that I've seen; when I go to "update history," it shows daily failure to install and tells me that I still need a restart (despite three attempts to do so). Troubleshooter turns up nothing except "updates pending."

I will try the steps you recommend.
