Windows 10: Repeated VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE from nvlddmkm.sys

I've been getting the VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSOD for about a month now. It generally occurs when I try to start a game. I've had it happen on Minecraft and Galactic Civilization 3, but oddly never on Ark Survival Evolved. I have a Geforce 840M on an Acer Aspire V. I've tried running with the internal GPU disabled to no avail. Reinstalling the graphics drivers, even using the Display Driver Uninstaller, has thus far yielded no results. (nvlddmkm.sys) occurs after instillation as it crashes while desktop is

being populated.

Looks like you are over clocking the CPU and/or GPU.

If that fixes it, post here: PC Custom Builds and Overclocking to get some help with over clocking your rig.

 

The laptop has a turbo boost of up to 2.7Ghz. Thus far I have not been able to locate any software or bios options to disable it.

 

I didn't see anything in the manual about disabling turbo either, oh well.

Have you tried disabling the Geforce 840M and running with the Intel chip?

How does the Geforce 840M work? It's a video chip, but where does it go in the laptop, since it looks like the Intel chip is still installed and available.

 

I've been running solely on the intel chip for a few days with surprisingly good results. While I've had to lower the graphics settings my games have been loading and running fine for hours at a time.

I have not made any efforts to disassemble the laptop, but I would expect the 840M to be plugged into a PCI-E slot. I would rather not disassemble the laptop if I don't have to; however, at this point since I wouldn't expect this kind of issue from software I have begun to suspect a hardware issue with the card.

 

If you ever do disassemble it, please take a picture. I'd like to see how it connects to eh system board.
