I know you can install Windows to a solid state drive SSD, but the downside is the frequent write cycles wasted and shortened life of the SSD.

Goal: exploit the speed of the SSD and minimize read/write head thrashing slows performance on hard drive HD.

After Windows is functionally installed. You could build a boot only Windows on a solid state drive SSD that would have read only files and shunt any files with writes to the hard drive. Other functions is repairing Windows install, Boot from SSD to repair HD installed Windows and repair Windows installed on HD to rebuild or repair SSD Windows.

I am currently using Romex Primocache with SSD and boot time is excellent without write cycles being wasted. But write cycles are still being wasted on files that can't be blacklisted for updating frequently and need to be read often. On crashes, rebuilding cache is necessary, also using up write cycles.

  2. Cannot install Windows 10 using Recovery Drive on a 240GB Solid State Drive.

I have a Desktop with 1TB of HDD and is getting slow so I decided to buy a Solid State Drive to make the booting up faster.

    1. Created a Recovery Drive in Windows 10.

    2. Replaced the 1TB with the 240GB SSD.

    3. Booted from the Recovery Drive.

    4. Got an error that says the drive is too small.

is there something I should be doing first before installing the SSD or am I missing something?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  3. Unable to boot from a hard drive/ solid state drive

    You have two options:

    • Change the BIOS boot mode to "Legacy" instead of UEFI (simple).
    • Create the required UEFI folder (not so simple)

Upgrading to a solid state drive

I am considering upgrading to a Solid State Drive.

I have two basic questions that I hope someone can help me with.

    • I am running Windows 10 Professional. It was the free upgrade offered for Win 7 users. If I upgrade will I have any problems reinstalling/switching to the new SSD? Is there anything I should be aware of before upgrading?
    • I have upgraded hard drives many times over the years but this is my first Solid State upgrade. In the past I was always upgrading to a larger drive. Drive software always allowed me to clone to a larger drive. This time, I will be using a smaller SSD for
my operating system, 250 GB. My current Sata drive is 1 Tb. How do I proceed? If I simply install the smaller SSD, how do I get windows 10 on the drive? Do I install my original Windows 7 operating system and upgrade again? Will that work again? Or is there
a way to get the Win 10 license key and install Win 10 and use that key. If so, how do I get that key.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
