  2. DHCP with redundant Gateway does not work

I am having trouble connecting to my office network using Wifi.

I have done some investigation and found the problem which is...

When DHCP server serves the request and replies with multiple/redundant gateways, the device does take the IP and communicates within the local network but ignores the gateway and is not able to connect the outside network.

When I requested my Systems Administrator and he added specific setting for my device's MAC address and sent only one gateway in DHCP reply, device starts to connect outside.

Our office has other debian based and CentOS based systems running including Ubuntu workstations but none of them is having problem with multiple/redundant gateways but only N900 is having this problem. It means that the problem is not inherited from Linux
or Debian but the bug is related to Maemo itself.

I have tried to tell add some technical details and do not expect answers like to check firewall and so. This is a genuine problem and is not intermittent. We have experienced it using MS DHCP server under windows 2003 and win 2k as well.

End users: Please try to duplicate the problem before suggesting a work around or anything

Developers/Admins/Officials: I hope you acknowledge the problem soon.

    network settings reset upon boot

the router is set to be a DHCP server - but im trying to run static ip's for the computer. there is a static ip option in the drop down menu, but then i have to manually put in my ecternal ip settings for the internet, which my old router did not ask for...should i set it to static ip and use the settings that the router pulls from the isp via the DHCP setting?

EDIT: i just looked and under "Internet Set-up" its set to DHCP, and under "Network Set-up" i have DHCP disabled.

no, just the firmware that came with it. its a lot more complicated the the router i had been using. i've seen tomato mentioned in the forum quite a few times so that will be my next step

    Gateway Router Stops Responding/Stuck with a 2nd Router (Switch/Repea)

I don't believe so, as I think the logs only show user changes on the router (like changing the admin password or ip address etc...)

I am temporarily now using a computer mobile hotspot in place of the switch to see if the gateway router is possibly faulty.

I was thinking I could possibly change the switch IP to something like 192.168.2.1 (the mobile hotspot seems to use 192.168.137.x) , but would I still need to leave DHCP off? or if this is even possible?

    - - - Updated - - -

Well, I did switch around both the router and switch, changed various settings, did a 30/30/30 reset on each, and it seems stable now *Wink.
Its been over 24 hours without the gateway or switch going offline, so fingers crossed it will stay that way.

For those also experiencing the same problem, I did some things which may help you:
    • Perform a 30/30/30 reset
    • Let the gateway router automatically detect IP settings (if possible)
    • Try your ISP provided DNS address's first ^
    • Use the more modern/reliable router as the gateway
    • Use the very last IP possible on the switch, well outside the DHCP of the gateway

I believe the problem was my internet settings may have been configured incorrectly (no idea how), DNS I think... *sarc
