Reset user folder rights after using system disk as external drive ?

    Hello,

I took my SSD off my tower and took it as external drive during my holidays.

I had to access my own files from another Windows 10 machine.

When browsing to my user folder, I was asked to take ownership of the folder to access files (so easy!). I knew it was risky but I had to access those files.

Back to my tower, I could log on but many things weren't OK : no wallpaper, no search, Firefox and Thunderbird would not load profiles...

I could take ownership back browsing APPDATA and other subfolders but many problems still remains.

I suppose it should be as simple taking ownership back as it was answering "YES" on the other machine but how?

    Many thanks.

    :)

  2. windows 10 has bug issues that need immediate addressing.

I understand now that you only want to back up your files and not the system image. If you plug in a USB flash drive or external hard drive it should be detected in the window you show.

However a much easier way to back up your files directly is to simply drag your User Account folder to an external hard drive.

However like Windows back up this will also include a lot of user settings files that are not needed and in fact a corruption path into the new install.

For this reason to back up user files I only drag or copy/paste the User folders being used, eg Desktop, Documents, Pictures, etc. located under your user name in the C Dr, to a flash stick, external USB hard drive or if necessary disks.

Move unallocated space in external drive

Unallocated means the partition or drive is not formatted. You cannot move or include a partition unless it is on the same hard drive. Right click on the Start Button and select Disk Management to see how the drives are partitioned and the letter designation
of the drives and make sure it is your external drive. You can format that unallocated partition in Disk Management or if it is adjacent to the right of the formatted partition* you can extend the used partition to include the unallocated portion--combining
both. Then you will be able to use the external drive or that unallocated partition to store files, backups, system images. Be very careful when using Disk Management. Partitioning is not for inexperienced users so read the Help files about it.

    * the unallocated partition must be next to the other E partition and on the right side with nothing between them.

Reset user folder rights after using system disk as external drive ?

I'm about to do a "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" on my user folder but AFAIR this takes a long time whereas it took no time to take control of the folder of the other machine so is it really the same kind of operation ?

Tried tools to reset permissions (Reset Files Permissions & Windows Repair) with no luck.
Made a new profile and copied my old one into it : better for some part, worse for many others.
So I'll make a fresh install or reset this one...
