Windows 10: Reset Windows 10

Hi Shawn,

Performing a Reset & got confused at If your PC has more than one drive (partition) on the Windows 10 disk, then select to remove all files (delete) from only the Windows drive or from all drives.​ After upgrade there were three partitions: the very small one I assumed was a diagnostic partition & the recovery partition that says 100% free I assumed is where Windows would pull the reinstall from. Is that correct?

Guess I don't understand where Windows is pulling the reinstall from. If I delete all partitions including the recovery partition will the Reset still work?

Hello Richie, *Smile

Windows will automatically setup what it needs before starting the reset and wiping the drive. If it can't find a Windows image, it'll ask you to connect your installation media (ex: USB) to be used to reset with instead.

OK, don't have a installation media yet but if Reset fails will create one. Going to go ahead & select all drives. Am I wrong in assuming that there is still a diagnostic partition hanging around from Vista?

 

Post back with a screenshot showing the full layout of your Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc), and I'll be happy to see. *Smile

 

If it's still there after the Reset I will. I subscribe to several of your tut's (across vista, seven & eight forums) & see tenforums keeping you very busy today.

Well they are all three still there:





The System Reserved partition I always thought was a Diagnostic partition, e.g. F12 on Dell PC.
The Recovery partition have no idea? 450MB certainly not big enough to house an OS. I don't remember seeing it before WinX upgrade.

Feeling not so knowledgeable right now.

If you want those gone and have them recreated for Windows 10, that would require doing a clean install instead.

hi
my windows is resetting right now option two the clean one, i started it about an hour ago
and it is now stucked on 99%
is it usual to take that long? how much longer is it gonna be?
can i interrupt it or i should just wait for it to be finished?

As long as you have hard drive activity, it would be best to let it sit until finished.

 

here is my problem
i did that 3 1/2 hours ago
and it is stuck on 99% since then
what will happen if i turn it off?

my laptop is brand new i just got it today i'm frustrated *Sad*Sad*Sad
its asus n551jx with 2T hard

 

Usually one of three things below will happen by turning off and on. This is why it's best to let it sit if there is still any hard drive activity.

1) It'll pick up where it left off after restarting.

2) The reset will be cancelled, and it'll revert back to previous installation.

3) The Windows installation will be corrupted, and will require a clean install.
