  1. RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED BSOD loop. Unable to get past Windows loading screen or install clean OS.

    Hello.

I am in need of some assistance. My PC randomly got a BSOD error with "RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED" while I was using my PC and is stuck in a BSOD loop. This is not allowing my PC to boot past the initial loading screen, but I am still able to access my BIOS on the mother board. Before this issue happened, my computer was stable--there was no sluggish or poor performance. I should also mention that I maintain my computer often and ensure that all of my drivers and firmware are always up-to-date and there are no driver conflicts.

My first attempt to resolve my problem was to run the auto repair after my computer restarted several times with the BSOD error. I was able to access the auto repair feature, but as I was trying to select an option to help me troubleshoot, my computer got the BSOD again with the same error code: "RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED".

There was an instance where I was able to select an auto repair feature which allowed me to open command prompt. I used the sfc /scannow command, I also did a disk check using chkdsk /f. There were no errors to note after this process. I tried the dism method but the console stated that it was unable to perform the operation.

Since I was unable to go any further, I decided to use my laptop to download the Windows 10 Installation Media and install the ISO on a USB flash drive. I chose the Windows 10 64 bit as my PC is a 64 bit system. I confirmed that the flash drive had adequate space, and no other files on the flash drive. I do not have a CD/DVD reader.

I then proceeded to boot my PC from the flash drive to install new Windows 10 installation files on my hard drive, but I still received the BSOD error message after the files are initialized from the USB drive. I see the purple background but after that, a command prompt window opens and I get the BSOD.

There was a time where Windows did boot up to the login screen but as soon as the background image loaded for my to type in my login credentials, the BSOD with the same error message happened again.

Eventually I was able to access the Windows 10 installation setup and was able to choose my hard drive to perform a clean install. The setup finalized and had me reboot my computer. After then opened BIOS and set the boot priority for my hard drive this time since Windows installed the new files. The hard drive did boot up and was able to load the Windows logo but it got stuck at "Getting Ready" for about 10 hours, so I figured there was another problem.

Initially I thought the hard drive was the problem. I switched out a clean hard drive and still got the same BSOD error message. I've been messing around with some of my BIOS settings on the mother board and disabled fast boot which is allowing me to boot from my USB drive without getting the BSOD; however, my issue still remains regardless of what I try to do.

I highly doubt any of my hardware is at fault here. All systems are responsive and showing properly in my BIOS overview. I downloaded all of my hardware manufacturer manuals to see if there was anything I did on my end or anything I could help in resolving my problem. I did not find anything out of proportion.

As of now I have a hard drive with no files on it so I believe that my issue may be with something internal; such as a corrupted driver on the mother board or something. Below I listed my computer information of what I currently have:

    Motherboard: EVGA z68 SLI // BIOS v. 1.05 x64

    Memory: 16384 DDR3

CPU: Intel i7-2600K CPU @ 3.4 GHz Quad Core

GPU: Nvidia GTX 980 Ti (most recent driver)

    Thank you.

    :)

    Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:
    • Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
    • When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
    • Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
    • When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
    • This time enter your product key
    • When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
    • Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it
Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.
