  1. Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

Hi. I have a new wrinkle on a problem which I thought was solved. A while ago I used the .iso reg file to restore ISO files to the Windows default, and that worked fine the first time. Later I went back to CyberLink PowerToGo because it lets me choose the drive letter so I can keep F available for automatic backups. Today I decided to go back to Windows because PTG only lets me have one virtual drive at a time, but the .iso reg file no longer works. I made sure that there were no virtual drives beforehand, and I restarted Windows afterward, but ISO files were still associated with PTG. At first I used the file I originally downloaded, but then I downloaded a new copy, and neither of them works. The reset option in the Settings app worked, but I'm still concerned about why the reg file no longer works. Also, I'm wondering whether it's normal for the Settings app's reset function not to affect .txt files.

    Hey Greg, *Smile

I've just updated the download for ISO. Please download the new version and try again.

The option in Settings will only affect the file types that can be associated for the item listed in Settings. ISO wouldn't be included.

  3. Thanks. The updated version works. Also, I don't know what most people's experience is, but on my system, the Settings option does affect ISO files. Before I downloaded the updated file, I experimented by changing the file association back to PowerToGo, and double-clicking an ISO to verify it. Then without doing anything else, I did the Settings thing and it went back to the Windows default.

  4. Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

Hey! I have a request that would GREATLY be appreciated. I need to change my file type .001 back to unknown. I know it isn't even a real file type, which is actually the problem. Kind of a long story, but the tl;dr is don't associate file types with others to try to avoid dling the program's you need. >_<

Like I said, it would help a ton. Thanks in advance!

    Howdy,
    Masterminds of Window 10
Running Windows 10 Version What a day. Reset PC because I couldn't name any folders. Path not specified errors and so on. It took all my installed shit with it. The printer has no driver and none to found.

I had to reinstall all my stuff. Tweak all my settings and delete all old restore points and run disk clean up.
Since I reset, it also took the free DVD Player app along with it.
Such a trivial problem considering now I have no driver and none to be found for a ip4600 Pixma printer that worked just fine , useless cargo now.

Not too mention having to reinstall so many things. What a day. I installed Thunderbird mail and made the MISTAKE of opening the Lightening file extension xpi in Thunderbird. Now when I try to install calendar and persona's it opens as an attachment in good ole Thunderbird.
No answers to how to change file extension. It offers Thunderbird app and that is all no other options.

Is it safe to just delete the xpi register key and hopefully have this issue go on it's way?

Thank you kindly for your time and consideration

Here's a .reg file below that will unassociate .001 files for you.

    Hello In The Zone, *Smile

For now, you might see if the .reg file below may be able to help. It will remove the user choice association set for XPI files.

  8. Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

Thanks so much for your help!

I'm having problems with large ICO files only displaying medium icons with large padding or borders. Starting with the Windows Seven forums, I found an article that suggested that I delete the Icon Cache Database. But that did not work. The last article recommended that if that did not work to try the Windows 8 equivalent to this article. So I looked to see if there was a Windows 10 equivalent instead. Do you think that following the steps on this page might fix my problem? I ask because I don't like doing a lot of stuff to my computer and not knowing what I'm doing. I've attached a picture showing the actual ICO file vs the shortcut with the same .ICO file applied. Its much smaller with large amounts of padding.

Just some additional info in case I'm doing something wrong. I created a shortcut on my desktop. I then changed the icon by clicking the Change Icon button. All of my large icons are in the documents folder with a subfolder called My Icons. I then go to view and change the icon to large. (the picture below shows the shortcuts in a folder and displays shortcuts as Large and Extra large, but all of them are medium instead.)

Hello Jacob, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

Is this a 256x256 pixel .ico file?

It won't hurt to merge the .reg file in the tutorial for the ico option to see if it may help.

  10. Hi Brink,

First thank you for this very useful tutorial! I regularly have to help persons sort out file associations and have been waiting for the first request to fix thing on a WIN 10 machine. I now know exactly where to go to find a solution.

I have a question please which may be related.

When running the reliability monitor, the display generates a view of the data that is most useful. I started saving reliability monitor outputs and I notice these are saved as [.XML] files, which then opens by default in IE. How can one display these saved reliability files using the internal display as used by WIN 10 instead?

On the list in this tutorial, the default for [.XML] is Internet Explorer and the only options available are XML, IE, etc. I presume this would be another one of the "unknown apps" used internally.

    best

    Hello Geoff, *Smile

That's correct. XML files do not have an association set to them by default. You can use any browser or text editor to open an .xml file with.

Could you also add file types "CSS" and "PHP" to the list? I have an application that took them over. Not sure how to get back to the defaults.

Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

    Hello pcunite, *Smile

I've added CSS to the tutorial.

PHP is not associated by default, but the .reg file below will unassociate it for you.

Wow, thank you! Would your PHP file be the same for .JS files too? Just change the file extension? I installed an editor that went crazy with file associations.

You could change the file extension in the .reg file above if you want to unassociate JS files, but JS has a default association that you can download from the tutorial instead. *Smile
