Restore Windows 10 and/or reset PC

    Hello Folks-

Because my Dell XPS was acting up, I tried SFC /Scannow. It locked up at 11%, so I tried to reset the PC without losing personal files. I am now getting the BSOD ; there does not appear to be a way out of it. The error message is something like NTSC system files. The laptop will not even boot, Because I upgraded to Windows 10 free, I do not have DVD or other way to get the license key. Wld welcome any advice and/or help.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Reset PC in Windows 10

    Hello Raghu,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community and providing us with the detailed description about the issue.

As per the description, I understand that you are experiencing issue with what will happen if you reset your PC in Windows 10.

I certainly understand your concern and will try my best to help you.

I would suggest you to refer to the article given below and check if that helps.

How to refresh, reset or restore your PC

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

    When you refresh your PC:

    • Windows will save your personal files, personalization settings, and Modern apps installed from the Windows Store.
    • Windows will reset your PC settings.
    • Windows will remove all installed desktop programs.
    • A list of the removed programs will be saved to your desktop.
By resetting your computer settings and removing all desktop programs, Windows 8 can “refresh” your PC so it’s more like a fresh install without deleting your personal files.

    When you Reset your PC:

When you reset your PC, Windows will remove everything. Think of this like doing a complete Windows reinstall and formatting your hard drive.

    • All your personal files and apps will be removed.
    • Your PC settings will be changed back to their defaults.
    Note:
If you’re experiencing problems with your computer and want to fix them, you should try refreshing your PC first. Windows will restore system files and desktop programs to their default state, saving all your important personal
files (and Modern apps, if you use them.)

If you want to reset your computer to its factory default state – particularly useful if you’re getting rid of the computer and want to remove your personal data, or if you just want a clean start — you should reset your PC
    instead.

The above steps holds good for Windows 10 as well.

Restore Windows 10 and/or reset PC

Restoring Windows 10 Image using Macrium Reflect

In addition to the above. Here's my suggestion in step by step.
I assume you have Macrium Installed in your current HD and already made a backup copy.
    1. Connect your new HD via USB port and boot up.
    2. Run Macrium, click on Restore tab then select the Backup Image that you made to restore
    3. click on "select a different target disk" then select your new HD as destination

Restore Windows 10 and/or reset PC [IMG]
    4. Proceed to restore then Shutdown and disconnect the old HD and replace with the new HD
    5. Boot up with your new HD.
