  1. Retaining Search Box results

I love Windows 10 but its Search Box functionality is a step backwards from Windows 7. As in Windows 7, is there a way to retain Search Box results so I can return to the results if the first file or folder I open isn't the one I want? This was easy in Windows 7 but I can't find a way to do it in Windows 10. The search box results disappear now after I load a file or folder so I have to perform another search from scratch.

Let me try to explain differently:

    1. Click the Start button

    2. In the search box, type "Microsoft"

    3. Click "My Stuff" to limit the search to your computer

    4. In the "Show" drop-down box, click "Documents"

    5. Click "See All" and select a document

You'll notice that document opens but the search results window is lost so it's impossible to return to it if the first document isn't the one you want, necessitating another search from the beginning which is very frustrating. In Windows 7, the search results window would remain open in a minimized state so it could be activated to open additional documents.

I'm asking if this functionality remains in Windows 10 because it's very annoying to go back to the very beginning to continue searching.

    Thank you.

    :)

after installing the programs it is not shown in search results of search box

    Hello,

We suggest checking the Download Folder if the file was successfully downloaded. If you downloaded the files from the web, you may check this

    link
where to find the downloaded files.

If all fails, we recommend run Repair System Files and DISM to repair corrupted files or system. You may check ZigZag3143's post

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards.

There are three means of searching in Windows.. Cortana (My stuff), explorer search, and the Search fly-in from the right.
(and there's Search in Settings). All related or limited to the basic Windows search index.

None of these are really satisfactory or as convenient as some 3rd party tools.

    Recommended freeware:
    Everywhere by voidtools
    Locate32 (which I use)
    - these are fast indexing tools, the first being updated and with a smart GUI.
They offer simple search and complex search constructs, regular expressions.

And of course there are more options.

Another one, which I use in conjunction with "Everywhere," is Copernic Desktop Search, as it's pretty simple and quick. Plus, it can remember the search terms.

It has a nice GUI, which is very easy to understand, plus there's tabs to specify what type file you're looking for (which I'm sure others have too)

I do prefer the older version ( v.2), however I'm constantly reminded about newer versions, via the pop ups on the program. (I don't remember exactly why I opted for v2 over the others, but it seems to work fine in Win-10. Plus, I think the newer versions come with a price)

If interested, HERE'S THE LINK to v.2, which is free.

  6. As I've come to learn, 3rd party tools are often vastly superior to the basic "applets" bundled with Windows. Long ago I found better alternatives to Notepad, IE, Paint, Wordpad, Remote Desktop, etc.

My thanks to dalchina and b1rd for reminding me of that fact once again. I will investigate all three programs they recommend and select the one I like best. Actually I did use Copernic many years ago and liked it very much so I'll start with that one.

Desktop search is the heart and soul of an OS so Microsoft with all its resources should be able to provide a search program so superior to its competition that it's unnecessary to turn to 3rd party applications but that is not the case.
