Retrospect Backup 17.0.2 - Backup client not found ? (Win10)

I have been using Retrospect Backup for many years (latest v17.0.2 for a month or so), with Retrospect Backup currently running on a Dell Laptop (Win10 x64) connected to a Desktop (Win10 x64 Pro) running Retrospect Client.

In 2017, client detection problems surfaced ("Error -530 backup client not found", Retrospect 7.7.341 & Win7), and the simplest workround since has been to temporarily disable the antivirus software (VIPRE AS & Malwarebytes) during backups.

Retrospect Tech Support felt that the VIPRE firewall was at fault, but I couldn't find any VIPRE firewall settings that would allow the PCs to communicate using Retrospect Backup.

However, Retrospect Backup is now unable to detect backup clients: "Error -530 backup client not found". I have uninstalled/reinstalled Retrospect Backup, but it will still not detect the Desktop running Retrospect Client (Retrospect Backup 'Live Network': Piton Name Service using multicast ... and permanently 'searching for clients').

Any suggestions to enable the Laptop/Desktop to detect each other - using Retrospect Backup - would therefore be welcome.

    :)

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

    Backup utility

Cobian backup will do file backups locally or to ftp, with or without encryption and compression. However it doesn't do image backups, which is really what you need if want to fully restore your system.

I've used the W7 back up program and Acronis a few times to restore a system and both work great. With Acronis though, you need to burn the recovery cd they suggest FOR EACH and EVERY machine you use it on.

One problem with W7 backup is that seems to break easily. On one machine I did an upgrade re-install and the backup utility doesn't work. No luck in trouble shooting it either. So I now rely on Acronis exclusively for image backups. But I use Cobian for file backups to ftp.

    backup protected dvds

I want to create backup copies of my favorite DVD collections and I tried Nero but it said that the DVDs are protected. I tried looking for another software and I found this list of DVD copy software that claimed to be the best for copying protected DVDs. I need a feedback from someone who has tried using any of these software before I'll buy one. I just want to make sure so I can burn my DVDs and not my money. If you have any other suggestions or recommendations I would really appreciate it.
