Ridiculously late account security notifications from Microsoft and various other...

This morning I Got a notification from Microsoft about a suspicious login that occurred over 30 hours before they sent the notification! How is it supposed to help us if it's over a day after it happened?? Why wouldn't they be sending these right away like all other normal decent companies do? After that I changed my password and got a notification of password change 10 hours later LOL. What's going on here, is this even real?I'm also signed up for a text notifications which are not getting sent out to me! AND I'm signed up to receive invalid/failed login attempt notifications which I've ne

Follow these steps to check if it works:

Step 1: Open the Windows Settings menu by pressing the Windows Key and “I,” or alternatively search for Settings in the Windows search bar and click the corresponding result.

Step 2: Click Notifications & Actions in the left-hand menu. This will take you to a screen providing access to all of the settings related to notifications and the Action Center.

Step 3: Click the System icon, then select Notifications and actions from the left-hand menu.

Step 4: Look for the Notifications subheading, where you will see a number of toggles for various types of notifications. The following is a list of the settings you can toggle on this screen:

    • Get notifications from apps and other senders
    • Show notifications on the lock screen
    • Show alarms, reminders, and incoming VoIP calls on the lock screen
    • Hide notifications when duplicating my screen
    • Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows
You may just turn them off the notification as you need.

    Ridiculous installation requirement

@whs, what you have experienced is due Two-Step verification which you have turned on. It is of course up to you alone if you decide to use this added security feature or turn it off. This screenshot from MS account's security options page:

More: Microsoft Account "Two-step Verification" - Turn On or Off.

In my case, I have Two-Step verification on with a secondary email address, a mobile phone number and the Microsoft Authenticator app installed on my Windows phone. In my case when installing Windows and using an MS Account for initial sign in I will get this:

If I have no access to my Windows Phone or for another reason want to use an alternative method, I can select phone or email:

Conclusion: You will only be asked the security code sent by email if you have set up the Two-Step verification feature and email is the only option (you will not use the Authenticator app nor have you given a phone number in your MS Account security settings).
