Windows 10: Right-clicking a file and selecting "Choose another app" stopped working after upgrading...

After upgrading from Win10 to Win11, selecting any file say .txt, clicking "Open with" then "Choose another app" does nothing. No popup window to choose a different application. Any idea how to fix this?

Non-Store Default Apps for a file protocol in windows 10

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to follow the below steps.

1) Right click on the file and select choose another app to open. It will display the list of apps to open.

2) If the app is not listed then select more apps and check if you can find it.

We recommend that you download a fresh copy of Windows 10 ISO.



You can do so by clicking this article:

After downloading the Media Creation Tool, right click the MediaCreationTool.exe file then click
Run as administrator. Accept the End User License Agreement, then proceed to the following steps:

• Select the option Upgrade this PC now if you want to upgrade right away,
  
• Select the option Create installation media for another PC
  if you want to download an ISO image. Click Next
• If you want to download a particular edition or both architectures, uncheck the
  Use the recommended option for this PC.
• Click in the Edition list box, choose your edition.
• Select your desired architecture, 32bit or 64bit. Click Next.
  
• Select ISO file, then click Save, select your location then click
  Save.
• Wait while the .ISO image is created.
• After downloading the Windows ISO, mount it.
• You can also extract the ISO file using WinRar, copy the extracted files to a flash drive and run the setup on the affected computer.
• There are a number of ways to work with an ISO file using File Explorer. However, the easiest way to mount an ISO image is by
  double-clicking the file.
• You can also right-click the .iso file and click the
  Mount option.
• Once you mounted the file, you'll notice that Windows 10 will create a virtual disc drive that you can use to access its content from the left pane.
• Run the “setup.exe” to start the upgrade process.

Choosing Default Apps & Insider Programme

To resolve your concern, kindly choose the default apps by file type. To do this, follow these steps:

• Click the Windows logo (Start button).
• Click the gear icon (Settings).
• Choose System.
• Select Default apps.
• Click Choose default apps by file type.
• Check all of the video file type, and then check if you can change the default app to your preferred application.
