Windows 10: Roaming Profiles Empty Folder with Windows 11 24H2

We have a couple of Windows 11 24H2 machines which do not synch to their roaming profile folder - the folder is empty. They used to synch but after apparently some update they stopped synching. Nothing is logged. Onedrive is also enabled and I suspect this is causing the issue however it is also enabled on other Windows 11 machines and it works we have a GPO that excludes the OneDrive folder from being synched together with several other folders. In any case nothing gets synched - anyone have seen this? Is this caused by the new updates and the retirement of roaming profiles all together whi

There are no currently listed problems resetting version 24H2 of Windows 11 and no specific steps you need to perform, are you experiencing any problems with that insider build that is causing you to perform a Windows reset?

 

Windows 10 roaming profile includes AppData\Local & LocalNow folders

Existing Windows 7 & Windows 8.1 domain environment with accounts configured to use roaming profiles stored on a Windows 2012 server using DFS file share.

New Windows 10 Pro built for testing and logged on with an existing domain account. First hint something was wrong was the "Roaming profile not fully synchronised" errors. Looking the event log reveals lots of access denied errors from the user profile service
attempting to copy to/from AppData\Local and AppData\LocalNow.

Looking in the new v5 profile sub-folder created automatically, there is indeed three sub-folders:

• Roaming - expected
• Local - shouldn't be there
• LocalNow - shouldn't be there

The Local & LocalNow folders are not in the v2 profile from the existing Windows 7 & 8.1 clients.

Aside from these access denied errors and pop-up warning, including Local & LocalNow in the roaming profile is a really bad idea as it really slows down the log on & off process as they tend to contain large number of large files, e.g. cached application
data. The whole idea of splitting Local & LocalNow out is so this temporary/rebuildable data can be kept out of the profile.

Thunderbird profile folder in windows.old after updates

When a new version of Windows is installed or an upgrade is performed, Windows creates a windows.old folder to store files from the previous installation. It seems that during your fresh installation of Windows 11 Pro and Thunderbird, the profile folder for Thunderbird got created or moved to the windows.old folder. This is unusual behavior and suggests there might have been some issue during the installation or migration process.

To rectify this and move the Thunderbird profile folder to its usual location, follow these steps:

Step 1: Locate the Current Profile Folder

Navigate to the windows.old Folder:

Open File Explorer.

Navigate to C:\windows.old\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\.

Identify Your Profile Folder:

Look for a folder with a name that ends in .default or similar (e.g., xxxxxxxx.default).

Step 2: Move the Profile Folder

Create the New Profile Location:

Navigate to the usual location for Thunderbird profiles: C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\.

If the Thunderbird and Profiles folders do not exist, create them.

Copy the Profile Folder:

Copy your profile folder (e.g., xxxxxxxx.default) from windows.old to the newly created Profiles folder.

Step 3: Update Thunderbird to Use the New Profile Location

Open Thunderbird Profile Manager:

Close Thunderbird if it is running.

Press Win + R, type thunderbird.exe -p, and press Enter.

This will open the Thunderbird Profile Manager.

Create a New Profile:

In the Profile Manager, click Create Profile....

Follow the prompts and choose a custom folder.

Point to the location where you moved your profile (e.g., C:\Users\<YourUserName>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default).

Set the New Profile as Default:

Select the new profile you just created and check Use the selected profile without asking at startup.

Click Start Thunderbird.
