Windows 10: Rogue HP Printer driver -- cannot get rid of it.

Hi there

just cannot get rid of an HP printer on W10 CU update.

Did the standard things - removed via Devices and printers, removed drivers via print server (on the devices and printers) , stopped the spool and deleted entries from printers file on spool and also removed entry from registry.

Printer is STILL there after next re-boot so where else is it hiding !!!!!! - any ideas. (BTW Of course I've disconnected the hardware !!!!).

HP driver update for HP LaserJet M1530 MFP Series PCL 6 - Error 0x80240017

I installed an HP printer recently - printer works fine. But ever since then, I keep getting this error for Windows Updates:

HP driver update for HP LaserJet M1530 MFP Series PCL 6 - Error 0x80240017



When I checked for any driver updates for the printer, it said it was up to date.

I have uninstalled the printer and keep checking for Windows updates. It keeps giving me this same error. I cannot upgrade to the new Windows 10 Anniversary version because of this error.



How can I get rid of this update that keeps me from upgrading?

I have also had the scanning troubles with HP, and it looks to be their fault, Most all-in-one printers that have HP drivers installed won't scan in Windows 10. The Microsoft driver will, but it's fun getting rid of the HP garbage that seems to be a cheap
marketing attempt to force us to buy another HP printer for Windows 10. I for one will remember this the next time I need a printer..

But enough whining.. how to remove the HP thing.. :>

First open explorer and make sure there is no HP driver directory at C:\ or Downloads.

Hit Windows+X and pick control panel from the list

click View printers - right-click your printer and pick properties

click Hardware

click an item - I used HP LaserJet3050 Scanner and pick properties

click Driver then uninstall

Depending om how Windows is feeling at the time, you may need to go to the control panel window, pick show printers and delete the offending printer - seems having no driver anymore is no reason to get rid of the printer..

reboot

Go to settings and reinstall the printer - should have the Microsoft driver now, which CAN scan..

That old HP printer may be recovering from DriveStore.

You can access it manually and delete that old driver (if present):

Eventually I found the solution --Bonkers one I admit but it was the trick.

On a VM I needed to DELETE Printer from the VM hardware config -- otherwise the VM would re-connect the printer back into the VM -- not sure how or why but because you can dynamically add / remove (i.e connect / disconnect) hardware from a VM who knows how it interacts with Windows !!!





So after deleting the printer with regedit etc and then removing / deleting the printer from the VM configuration - at next boot system was fine. !!! -- Remove printer BEFORE re-powering on the VM though.

(This was running W10 VM under VMWARE Workstation) --probably the same on vmware player.
