    Router Going Bad?

For awhile now I keep losing my wireless internet speed. I can go from a over 45Mbps to 2 or 3 hundred kbps. At first I thought it was the laptop because if I ran the windows repair a couple of times it would find a problem with the header and would fix my problem. Now I'm also noticing the speed lost on my old laptop and my wife's new laptop. If I reset the router the problem is fixed but then the problem comes back. Could this be a setting or do I need a new router? If I need a new router does anyone have any suggestions for a decent router. The router I have now is a Linksys EA4500.

    :)

Are you running the latest firmware on the router? Also check for channel interference from nearby WiFi's. I like inssider:
    inSSIDer 3.1.2.1 Download - TechSpot

Many times running a 40mhz channel spread will actually be slower depending on interfering channels. A clear 20mhz signal with no interference will run faster than a 40mhz channel with interfering channels.

It's been awhile since I did a firmware upgrade. As for nearby interference, my closet neighbor is to far away. I'll check for a firmware upgrade.

I checked the firmware. The router is set to automatic and the firmware is up to date. This is the first time I have ever had any problems with this router. I've had it for awhile so I wouldn't be surprised if it's going bad.

I've had better luck manually loading the drivers from the manufacturer of the network adapters in my computers rather than using those that came with Windows 10. That might help.

    Router Going Bad?

I thought about the network adapter driver but one computer is a Toshiba and the other one is a HP .I did another reset only this time I used a toothpick and pushed the reset button for over a minute. Then I unplugged the router for over a minute. After resetting the router I reset my Comcast modem. I had to setup the router from scratch. So far everything is working better than it has in a long time. Now under WiFi status the speed is listed as 72.0 Mbps instead of 45 Mbps. If it happens again I'll try a new router.

  10. If I'd read this six months ago, I would have presumed it was anything BUT the router. After all, these things are on 24x7 and last for years without problems, right? Then, I started to have network outages, especially serious drops in wireless performance. I switched routers to a different one (I borrowed) and the problems stopped. So, I replaced the old Linksys (so old, it still ran Cisco software!) with a new Linksys EA6350 and haven't had a problem since.

I've had good luck with my Nighthawk v.1 router. At first I wasn't getting very good range on 5ghz, but newer firmware versions fixed that so range on 5ghz is nearly as good as 2.4 now. Only thing I don't like about Nighthawk is that it won't push Wake On Lan through from the internet, only from the LAN side.

I had to reset my router by unplugging it again. My upload speed dropped to 10 Mbps and my upload was 12 Mbps. I think I'm going to have to replace my router.

I had a similar problem and complained bitterly to my ISP -- Verizon. They started an online chat and confirmed the low speed, so they ordered me a new router -- which arrived the next week.

Funny thing, though, the next DAY, my internet speeds were back to "normal". My guess is that Verizon was throttling my performance -- since I had previously been getting very good Internet speeds, and those speeds returned after I complained to them.

So, I would check with your ISP and see what they will do for you. It might not actually be a "router" problem.

Mark no provider does Shaping anymore, because they all have been busted by the FCC for it. Always run Shaper Probe, if you suspect problems with your speed. As for the router, yes some can be worse, depending on what speed you are paying for. Lower end routers tend to not have very high WAN to LAN speeds. I use the Cisco RV-320 without any issues. If the need ever comes in the future that I was able to get 1 GB service. It would be able to handle it.

I finally decided to replaced the router. So far my wireless speeds are up. I knew it wasn't Comcast because my desktop with a wired connection never lost speed. In fact Comcast recently increased my speed from 105 Mbps to 150Mbps.
