Hi all. So RTF imploded on my Windows 11 machine all by itself. I found out that Microsoft mothership ordered it a while back and now it finally happening. So what now?On my never system files seem to open by default in Word and that asks for money. I guess it's long tail freemium, but I still feel a bit burned by this swap as I think I begun using it on windows 95. btw, THANK YOU for this long legacy support. What to do to....1. Read and edit for free forever and without additional costs additional after windows licence costs.2. Convert rtf to text and display on screen. Maybe with Powershe

    :)

    rtf. file

    Hi Michelle,

Some documents when saved takes up space due to its components. For us to help you with your concern, we'd like to know if your rtf file has images on it.

Meanwhile, if your rtf file has pure texts, we suggest that you follow the steps below to reduce the size of your rtf file:

    • Compose your rtf file in Microsoft Word.
    • Instead of saving, copy and paste your composition to WordPad. All the formatting is copied over too.
    • Save the document with WordPad, and you'll get a significantly smaller file.

    Let us know the results.

    Cannot open .RTF file.

Followed your steps again: in the steps "For the 2nd part:

To set OpenOffice Writer as the default, right-click on a .RTF file, click Properties.

    Clicked "Change"

In the Open with dialog, clicked "More Apps" and scrolled down to the bottom of the dialog.

Clicked "Look for another app on this PC"

    Browse to locate this file

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4\program\swriter.exe"

OpenOffice Writer will be set as the default handler for .RTF files.

Click "Look for another app on this PC"

    Browse to locate this file"

    1. When I followed the steps highlighted above and clicked "Look for another app on this PC". When I browse to: C:\Program Files (x86) ; "OpenOffice4" is not found in the list of available apps.

    2. However, when I browsed using Explorer: "This PC>OS (CRTF recommendations for future use :)": OpenOffice IS shown in the list of programs.

How can I fix the discrepancy between steps 1 and 2 above so that when I browse using step 1 "OpenOffice4" will show up in the list of available apps?

    .rtf default app

    Hi Richard

Right click an rtf file, choose 'Open With' - Choose Another App

Important - Check the box marked 'Always use this app to open rtf . . .'

If the app you want to use is not in the list, scroll to the bottom and click 'More Apps'

Again if the app is not in the list, at the bottom, click 'Look for another app on this PC', then navigate to find the application you want to use
