So he can clean install over 8.1 and it will activate? If you do this make an image of 8.1 first.

No.. you upgrade over 8.1 you don't clean install and it remains active when you "upgrade".

In the OP he said he wanted to Tinker with it. Most people do not tinker with an activated Windows 8.1.

It's up to the OP to decide what he wants to do with his system Gary. Pleas stop the arguing about this ok??

First of all, it's far from certain that 10240 is the RTM. If you can find an ISO of 10240 that you feel like trusting, you can indeed use it to upgrade your 8.1 and tinker around. But first you'll want to make an image of your 8.1 system to put back on to catch the official upgrade - I'm pretty sure they are not accepting new members to the Insiders Program at this time (could be wrong - there is so much misinformation going around regarding all things Win10 that it's hard to know what's really the deal).

So no one can disagree with you or they are arguing. He has an ISO that is not From MS, and you want him to upgrade his Windows 8.1. I am not arguing just stating a safer way to go.

sigh.. I used an ISO that I got from Microsoft New for my upgrade and I've had zero issues.

I have found that if you disagree with our passive-aggressive Bunny, you might as well just exit the thread. He is immovable. If you disagree with him, you are arguing. Don't take it personally - I sure don't.

    Fact:
Any activated copy of 7/8/8.1/10IP will remain activated after an update via ISO (from within the previous OS).

The OP did not say where he got his ISO. MS is not providing them any longer. But like you said, the OP is free to do as he pleases.
