Windows 10: Run Disk Cleanup as Admin

There hasn't been an update on using Disk Cleanup in a few years here, though there was a good discussion on this utility a while back when we first heard it might disappear from Windows 10 (Disk Cleanup is Going Away in Windows 10). One thing many home users may not have noticed about DC is that after it opens and asks for confirmation of the drive to be examined, it displays the check-boxes panel shown here (top) with an option button in it labeled Clean up system files. If that button is clicked, DC re-checks for confirmation of the drive to be examined, and then displays a richer check-boxes panel that includes some big-ticket items that deserve attention (bottom), and the Clean up system files button (which you already used to change the display of options) is absent. This panel display and replacement process (non-system to system) can be reduced to a one-click process by simply setting your shortcut for DC to Run as Administrator. DC will then just confirm the drive-to-be-examined and immediately display the full (system-included) panel. Some clicks saved are some clicks earned (or something like that). 蔚丹

Hi joysoder, to properly and safely delete any files not required by your system, run Disk Cleanup twice as explained below. Each time select everything in the list and delete them. Disk Cleanup will not suggest deleting anything that is not safe to delete

Open File Explorer

Click on your hard drive

On the Manage Tab, click Cleanup

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

Start Disk Cleanup again

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

This time in the resulting dialog, click 'Cleanup System Files'

Let Disk Cleanup run another scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

Rest assured, it is totally safe to delete everything suggested by the Disk Cleanup Process, please tun the Disk Cleanup twice as explained below, please remember to untick your Downloads folder if you actually store files in that folder . . .

Open File Explorer
